Could they not have just reduced the rev limit to say, 13, 14k and kept them 1000cc? Ban aero parts as and when they needed to be, and got rid of ride height devices front and rear and have done.

Those are called Dwarf cars. They're made to look like a production car made between 1928-1948, but only 5/8 normal size. And your ears are correct, they generally run 1000cc motorcycle engines. (GSXR, etc).

This is the same thing that happened when they switched from 990cc to 800. I'm still trying to figure out why no one saw this coming. I still maintain that they should have stayed at 1000cc and just shrunk the bore to limit revs and make the bikes torquier and harder to launch down the straights.

What was the point of having Binder test Pirellis on a 1000cc bike? I thought he and Pedro were there to give input on the 850. If they were going to split it this way, why not put Pedro on the 1K so he has less info to take to Ducati?

I'm going to assume they aren't simply smaller 1000cc engines, but engines engineered to be 850cc. I know just enough engineering to know not everything scales 1:1 with size. The bore will be reduced from 81mm to 75mm making them less oversquare. So who knows, the exhaust ports could be oversized

It's unclear whether Maverick Vinales will get a shot on the 850cc or will stick to the 1000cc. The test's mainly about finding out more about the condition of his shoulder 🦾
