#10GW
It's 10:40am on the east coast of Australia - black coal in NSW has dropped below 1.7gw, and all forms of coal nationwide barely surpass 10gw combined (it would be lower but Victoria is having a very low RE morning).

☀️🌬️ China is building one of its biggest renewable energy bases in the Kubuqi Desert.

The project has a planned capacity of 10GW, combining large scale wind and solar generation across desert and barren land. ⚡

"why can't they use that to cure cancer" They already do drug discovery on exascale systems, consuming 150+ gpu years... resulting in nothing. A realistic & reasonable lower bound for estimates is ~1 billion gpu years, a casual 6666666.66667x more. 10GW systems are a drop in the ocean, 10TW's coming

Literally cry is a river. We need the water for the 10GW of data centres she wants to inflict on us.

GB already has 10 subsea interconnectors with >10GW capacity between our island and our 6 nearest neighbours* so the technical expertise to do this is well established and avoids the headaches of installing pylons.

10 years ago 10GW was max in UK, now it's 25GW, soon 25GW will be the norm., and storage needs to compensate, some of us don't want a technology where only 2 exist globally in electricity production currently, they will be 10 years in planning and construction, and have a millenia of waste legacy.

So? SMRs are designed to be built in quantity. If we can get nuclear up to say 10GW continuous output (HPC + SZC provide 6GW, SMRs the rest) that's good news. We need wind and nuclear and solar. It's not either/or.

September 12, 2026 at 3:24 PM
I always thought that the energy numbers of 10gw or so being stated for these data centres were way too large for them to be economically feasible. The energy has to come from somewhere, it can't be all built anytime soon and is just more costs that has to be repaid somehow.

¿Acabarán siendo 10GW en 2026?
September 12, 2026 at 12:25 PM
Five years ago CA had essentially no battery for on demand supply . Today 17GW. Next decade current plan is another 10GW. It can absolutely be accelerated. Solar currently at 50GW peak. Cheapest solution for expansion. At many temperatures it is more efficient to go gas->elec->heat than gas->heat.
September 11, 2026 at 11:39 PM
If this is true, it makes me wonder what if that remaining 10GW is. How much actually runs core infrastructure and how much can Microsoft lease to itself to run ChatGPT/copilot? Is this part of why services on Azure go down so frequently now, they get resource-constrained?

The problem that Broadcom faces is that its largest customers (direct or by proxy) are now Anthropic and OpenAI, neither of whom can afford the chips. This means that someone - Broadcom, Microsoft or Google - has to finance them.
