i know this book is probably sold to others or people recommend it to others if people wanted more 12kingdoms or more stuff about taiki. but god, hirose is what made the book this painful to get through...

yapped for like 890 words... wtf, and i only talked about hirose and not so much about taiki or the genre differences depending on your read order..

anyway i enjoyed the novel. hirose was allowed to have ugly emotions and i like the character arc that i believe ono fuyumi intended for hirose
overall thoughts!! i think its a pretty neat book! the most interesting aspect about this book is how your reading experience will definitely change depending on your reading order. like what i said before, if you approach the book with 12 kingdoms knowledge, you'll understand much more of what's happening, and that LOWERS the horror value because a lot of the horror in this came from the unknown, and the expectation of realism, so the fact that there's no scientific explanations for the fantastical stuff makes it terrifying. i can definitely see people arguing for this being part of 12 kingdoms series AND also as a standalone because the themes and vibes are completely different. speaking as someone who's only done with Arc 1 of the anime, 12 kingdoms is very much a fantasy isekai that focuses on worldbuilding in a place highly inspired by China, including cultural elements & mythology (e.g. the qilin being bringers of luck, and tying that in with a variant of Mandate of Heaven to choose a king). meanwhile, Demon(ic) Child focuses on entirely different things, like the idea of place in society, the desire for a sense of belonging, the need to feel validated and to find someone else to connect to, as well as the overarching subject of bullying and fear. (related note: this is also partly why I read more modern/futuristic stories, because I like reading about these very real subjects lol. not to say ancient/fantasy settings don't do that at all, but they do it differently) Very fascinated by Ono Fuyumi's choice to have the story told through a protagonist struggling to find a place in the society, and who ultimately latched onto Takasato, whom he viewed to be "the same as [himself]" in the sense of being at odds with society. Because of this, Hirose is completely unafraid of Takasato, because Takasato was in a way, a refuge/salvation for him -- Takasato's existence validates his belief that he DIDN'T belong to society. AND through Hirose's lack of fear, Takasato manages to finally also find shelter for himself, as Hirose was the only person who wouldn't be afraid of him. TBH, through the course of reading, I really love the two's relationship because they genuinely gain comfort and warmth in each other's existence (even if Bad Shit Kept On Happening). But the problem here was that Hirose WAS wrong. Takasato and himself were similar, but they were ultimately different. Shit kept happening because Takasato truly DIDN'T belong to this world. While Hirose was human, and DID belong to this world. Hirose was good for Takasato because he offered him a temporary relief from the society's hatred and animosity aimed at him. But Takasato was NOT good for Hirose, because he fed into his delusions that he was different, and made him unhealthily attached to him. IMO, I love that Hirose's the protagonist of this, because I love his mental landscape Ono Fuyumi painted. Unlike Takasato who never hated, Hirose's theory that Takasato subconsciously hated was likely a reflection of himself, of his subconscious negative emotions/animosity to the rest of the world. As the story progressed, you can just tell Hirose kept getting more and more attached to him (quite literally about to give him his entire world if he wanted ngl) and how he grew increasingly volatile at the idea that Takasato might leave him (because, let's be real, he started thinking that the place he should belong to was by Takasato's side, since he thought of them as the "same kind of people"). AND THAT CULMINATES AT THE END, when Takasato had no other choice but to leave this world, and Hirose could only cry and beg for him to stay because he'd lose "the place he belonged" ("If you leave me, then what about me?") Hirose's is, IMO, a study of a character who's so desperate to find a place to belong to that he ends up latching unhealthily to another person because he wished desperately to be validated. Which is why the story could only end this way, in what I see as a tragedy as Hirose makes an almost violent realisation that they WERE different and WILL be separated. His path had been laid out before, repeated to him multiple times by his own teacher who had seen through things and knew that Hirose belonged here, unlike Takasato. It was an awful, awful wake-up call for Hirose to face reality and live here as every other person. Narratively, or at least from the point of view of Hirose's character, I think this book would've benefitted from an epilogue, where Hirose looks back at this incident and made peace with himself. But that never happened, and we never got to see how Hirose feels after everything is done, so it feels like Hirose would never heal from this incident (that's how I got destroyed emotionally). But in part, I think that's the problem because this book is also seen as a Book 0 of 12 Kingdoms. So, while Hirose is the protagonist/narrator of this, Takasato was the main character the plot revolves around. So, Ono Fuyumi could only end on that note focusing on the fact that Takasato was genuinely gone from this world. (I still want an epilogue though, Ono Fuyumi PLEASE I NEED TO HAVE CLOSURE FOR HIROSE)

midway through chapter 2 of the Demon Child and i think it is a good decision to read this after book 1 and before book 2 🤔 altho im only saying this bcs ive watched the anime (multiple times) and i know the context of demon child in relation to the main 12kingdoms story
