I don't know how much ¹³⁷Cs they're talking about (because they don't say) but it's kinda everywhere because of our nuclear bombs and reactors. 🫠

Since the uses of 137Cs far outclass its supply in waste, finding ways to safely store it is a critical nuclear safety challenge. What is needed is a stable cesium compound that is not a water soluble salt. Enter #pollucite!

Institutions are phasing out gamma-irradiators, but can X-ray irradiators replace them for mouse transplant models?

We report that with proper dose calibration, X-ray conditioning produces equivalent hematopoietic chimerism and AML transplant outcomes. Encouraging news!

Since the mineral is not water soluble and synthetic forms can be over 40% cesium by weight, it could be a safe and efficient way to concentrate and store 137Cs waste. This method could be used to assist reclamation efforts around Fukushima, for example.

Nifty!

If you have a spare 50 bucks, you can buy a nice exempt quantity check source from spectrumtechniques.com. they're the ones that make them fresh. I've had them make me a lot of unique samples too. Like a 3.7kBq 137Cs source.

They'll also sell you a 137Ba-m generator 😲 for like 150

Basically, you pass an illusion solution through a little container that contains 370kBq 137Cs. The result is the meta stable isomer, 137Ba-m with a 2.55 minute half life. It's really cool for teaching Half-Lives because you can measure it within 30 minutes disappearing and calculate stuff from it

One proposal from Yokomori et al. (2014) suggests using a reaction with calcium hydroxide (lime) to form small crystals of pollucite containing 137Cs. The crystals could be mixed with concrete and easily stored at a waste facility (or deposited underwater, as the authors propose).
