Gaming on Android phones has historically been a bittersweet experience, but not because of the hardware. It's because of inconsistent support for games and controllers in the Android ecosystem. But the hardware can look very good. Like Xiaomi subsidiary POCO's new F9 Ultra smartphone, which boasts a 6.9-inch 185Hz AMOLED display with support for 185FPS gaming, symmetrical speakers with sound by Bose, and an 8,050mAh battery. With an RRP of just $1,499, it looks like this device is going to punch well above its weight. Under the hood sits a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip paired with a second, dedicated chipset called VisionBoost D8, which POCO says is a first for its F Ultra line. That processing combo is what unlocks the phone's secret sauce: 185FPS gaming. Compared to 120FPS, POCO says that's 65 extra frames per second and a refresh interval three milliseconds shorter. According to the announcement, 185 FPS gaming is natively supported in more than 21 titles. Apparently four more games, including _PUBG Mobile_ , _Delta Force_ , _Call of Duty: Mobile_ and _League of Legends: Wild Rift_ , can also reach those heights through the phone's "Smart Frame Rate" feature. A 4,800Hz instant touch sampling rate and 200Hz gyro sampling round out the pitch for competitive mobile gamers. The 6.9-inch AMOLED display uses what POCO calls HyperRGB technology, giving every pixel its own red, green and blue subpixels rather than sharing them. POCO says this delivers sharpness closer to a 2K panel while sipping less power. The phone also debuts a new luminescent material capable of 4,500 nits of peak brightness in general use and 10,000 nits for HDR content. The F9 Ultra packs dual symmetrical 1115D stereo speakers alongside a dedicated 1620 subwoofer for a proper 2.1-channel setup, plus a new Game Audio Mode that pushes footstep sound louder for players who need directional cues without losing the rest of the mix. The sound is tuned by Bose, giving better detail at lower volumes. Battery life gets a boost too, with an 8,050mAh cell, the largest POCO has fitted to an F Series phone, backed by 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. It can also reverse charge other devices at up to 27W wired or 22.5W wireless. On the camera side, the F9 Ultra introduces POCO's first 200MP main sensor with OIS, alongside a 5x periscope telephoto lens offering 10x lossless zoom and up to 20x AI-assisted zoom, plus a 32MP front camera. POCO is also promising four years of Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates, a longer runway than most phones at this price.
