.@RoswellPark researcher @IrwinGelman articulates what we #Metastatic patients know so well: vast majority of research $ go towards early stage research, yet mets are what kill. We need more metastatic focused research. #2019MetCancerEngagement

1/2: CTCs can also be used to measure response the therapy in #Metastatic patients and may detect progression months before imaging. CTCs & cfDNA can also detect new and potentially actionable mutations #2019MetCancerEngagement

Here at @metavivor @MetastasisRS metastatic patient engagement conference. Great discussion on disparities with @ViolentKuchar @mkhealingwithin & Broderick Crawford. Racial/ethnic background, age, gender, even where one lives are all sources of disparity. #2019MetCancerEngagement

Pam Kohl @PamLKohl , ED of @KomenNCTC telling her story of being Stage1, negative nodes, Onctype of 6 (low risk) - and still becoming metastatic 7 years later #2019MetCancerEngagement

Stefan Werner, Phd of Hamburg, Germany talks about body of research showing that CTC count at early stage diagnosis can correlate with prognosis. Then why aren’t we doing this routinely??? #2019MetCancerEngagement

2/2: soapbox alert: EVERY METASTATIC PATIENT SHOULD HAVE A LIQUID BIOPSY AT DIAGNOSIS AND PROGRESSION. If not to make treatment decisions for that pt then to use this info collectively to determine direction of future research. #2019MetCancerEngagement

USC @KeckMedUSC researcher @cnsmender talking about brain mets at #2019MetCancerEngagement. Primary brain tumors = 23000/yr but mets to brain from other primaries =400,000 😲
November 18, 2024 at 5:03 PM
Mind blown: intranasal drug delivery in order to bypass blood-brain barrier to treat brain mets. Gotta start following Josh Neman @cnsmender & his work #2019MetCancerEngagement

Bone mets research @conor_ie now speaking at #2019MetCancerEngagement. Focus on #ProstateCancer, but many lessons applicable to any bone met.
November 18, 2024 at 5:03 PM
We now know that some cancer cells can be disseminated very, very early - before a primary tumor is even visible - remaining dormant for years before reawakening and raising ugly metastatic heads. Sneaky little bastards #2019MetCancerEngagement

Even though she’s on the other coast, @SpiveySandra is asking great ?s of our panelists at #2019MetCancerEngagement, including one about how can imaging better distinguish between scar tissue from treatment and persistent #brainmets. Answer: imaging is getting there, stay tuned
November 18, 2024 at 5:03 PM
In response to @SpiveySandra’s ?about problems with bone bx decalcification process harming the tissue so it’s not evaluable: slow decalicification process is less damaging. Before a bone bx ask how your facility does decalcification. #2019MetCancerEngagement

.@cnsmender: “You have a right to your tissue”. You can, and should, take possession of your tissue before it’s destroyed - it may not be kept forever (it’s in a paraffin block so no special handling needed). #2019MetCancerEngagement

Ginny Mason @IBCResearch takes the podium as facilitator for today’s first #2019MetCancerEngagement session. Go Ginny!!
November 18, 2024 at 5:03 PM
Palliative care should be offered to every metastatic patient upon diagnosis. Ginny Mason @IBCResearch May not have #metastatic cancer herself, but she knows what we should be offered. #2019MetCancerEngagement

Dr. Patch Adams got it right (and he was at UVA, where I went to medical school - maybe I shouldn’t mention UVA when I’m on the UNC-CH campus!) #2019MetCancerEngagement

Patrick Coyne of Med U South Carolina reminds us that advanced directives are important, not only for cancer patients but for “everyone over 40” #2019MetCancerEngagement

We’re short about 15,000 palliative care docs across the country. Young #MedicalStudents I have a specialty for you where you will make a HUGE positive impact in people’s lives. #2019MetCancerEngagement

Not only does palliativecare help us feel better, it helps us live longer. #2019MetCancerEngagement
November 18, 2024 at 5:03 PM
1/3 One of our round table questions is whether early palliative care is better than late. Clearly early palliative care is better. #PalliativeCare #2019MetCancerEngagement
November 18, 2024 at 5:03 PM
2/3 Perhaps we should be asking if more holistic interventions early (physical therapy instead of narcotics, counseling instead of drugs) are better #2019MetCancerEngagement
November 18, 2024 at 5:03 PM
3/3 And since we’re short of #PalliativeCare docs we should use trained onc nurses, PAs, NPs, social workers. #2019MetCancerEngagement
