This map illustrates the full local Chicagoland rail transit network per the 2034sight Plan, a ten-year regional rail vision for Chicagoland. The 2034sight Plan focuses on the creation of an entirely new operating paradigm for Chicagoland passenger rail: a three-tiered system of local rail transit that creates a unified, cohesive network of suburban and urban transit. Two of the modes -- Metropolitan Rail and Rapid Transit -- are direct iterations of our existing Metra and CTA systems, respectively. The third mode is an exciting hybrid of the two: CrossTowners, a "regional rail" network that would initially be comprised of six lines to -- and through -- downtown Chicago to link underserved parts of the city with downtown and beyond to the suburbs. CrossTowners generally operate on existing Metra routes, but at higher frequencies with smaller, lighter, modern electrified trains. CrossTowners can combine Rapid Transit-like frequency downtown with expansive -- but not expensive -- coverage throughout suburban Cook and DuPage counties, which would also allow for faster and more frequent Metropolitan Rail service in the collar counties. Supplemented by the Midwest's network of long-distance and state-sponsored passenger trains centered around Chicago Union Station, 2034sight would create a robust network of fast and frequent train service throughout Chicagoland by fully leveraging our region's existing strengths as the railroad hub of the United States. By maximizing the efficiency of our existing rail network rather than trying to build an entire network from scratch, we have the ability to equitably make major strides in our region's sustainability goals and dramatically improve our economic resiliency as well for a fraction of the cost compared to building an entirely new transit network. We’re going to spend $5.75 billion to extend the Red Line by five stops, and it’s still a good project.

For a little more than double that, we can create a six-line, 150-station regional rail network throughout Chicagoland.
