#20thc
Gah. Trying to remember a book (the state of internet searching isn’t helping!). So on the offchance:

There was a young woman in the book who took work for a psychologist in the mid-20thC, and he ran experiments using her baby (turned out to be Little Albert). I don’t even recall if this was

I asked the young guy in Cologne tourist information where Keith Jarrett had played his concert in 1975. He had obviously never heard of it, and I was shocked - literally one of the most important moments in 20thC music in his city and he didn't know.

It delights me that this dark fairytale type house sits between rather more modern buildings here. I have so many questions.

Feels like gatekeeping isn’t a fair term because of how limited the media landscape was in the 20thC.

Broadcasters were responsible for shaping the zeitgeist for populations that couldn’t consume information on their own terms.

Now we are better informed quantitatively, but have lost… focus??

Nazis 2.0 are the largest party in Germany. So yeah remembering the 20thC is out; delusion is very much in

Saw #Aberdeen v StJohnstone on 📺 & StJ penalty was never a penalty in my view. In 20thC ⚽ it was only a hand ball penalty if a player deliberately tried to control ⚽ by his hand. The Aberdeen defender has no chance to stop ⚽ from hitting his arm. Another example of how 21stC ⚽ is poorer than 20thC⚽.

Tijuana Bibles were a form of short erotic underground comics in early 20thC USA

A vindaloo is the hottest curry available in most British curry houses. Famously hot. Balti and Madras are also spicy, but not "spitting fire" hot.

[Publisher's marketing blurb:] Startlingly human & unflinchingly honest, this thinly veiled fictionalized account of talented political writer Victor Serge's time in prison is an important addition to the canon of prison writing as well as an unfiltered view of humanity in the early 20thC.

But how many of them are also in their 40s?

Also, it is an unusual name for anyone born before this century or after ~1800, doesn't show up in the top 100 girls names at all throughout the 20thC but is climbing now

It doesn't have a peak/trough line like a lot of 'dated' names do, it's just rare

It's really depressing how exactly everyone is repeating the 20thC, right down to the dialectical relationship between self-styled political opposites. They're locked in this mutually co-constituting spiral away from reality & humanity. It's not a horseshoe; it's a double helix.

DYK most mid-20thC gays lived #InTheCloset, which became part of gay identity, life style, & the desire for furtive sex play? Those who stayed in the closet supported the myth that gay & lesbian people did not exist. But many decided to live open, gay lives.

DYK some mid-20thC gay men married women, had children, & let their wives know that they had men lovers, while some kept it secret because it was illegal? Those lovers often worried that their closeted lovers would give them up.

Horn & Hardart Automats opened at the beginning of the 20thC and were extraordinarily popular across America.
From Mel Brooks to Irving Berlin to Audrey Hepburn to Neil Simon (who called them “the Maxim’s of the disenfranchised”) they were loved & beloved.

PS: It’s sad that supposed Film Critics (esp those in FT roles at what’s left of *Legit* news orgs) suffer from failure of imagination AND seem unaware of 20thC US film history. I dunno if the talented director, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, was going for this, but he does #Kubrick proud with #Digger 🎬🪖💣

Thirty years later, Pope Pius IX bricked over the door. (He also had personal executioner, invented papal infallibility, & declared abortion was murder!) The room opened in the 20thC. But there is still a warning on the door, & it costs extra to go in!

You cannot claim the 'state of israel' was a "response *to*/came *after* the holocaust"... it was underway from the moment Balfour wrote that letter, c1917.

Political zionism = late 19th century
Balfour = early 20th century
Influx of European 'jews' = early 20th Century
Holocaust = mid 20thC

[One of the books most frequently banned by right-wing, Trumpist, GOP fascists.] 1984 is a dystopian novel by George Orwell, published in 1949. It's about totalitarianism, mass surveillance & repression; also a love story. 1984's a classic & has had a strong impact on 20thC culture worldwide.

DYK until 20thC, a woman had to marry whomever her master—father, brother, owner—wished? A wife had to have sex when her new master/husband wished & abstain when he did or when he wished to have sex w/someone else. HowSexGotScrewedUp.com #GenderHistory #MarriageHistory

DYK early 20thC doctors taught parents that #SoloSex/#masturbation led to disease & death? They scared kids off it, tied their hands to bedposts, even did #clitoridectomy & infant #circumcision to stop it. Result: guilt. Ghosts of #HistSex still haunt. HowSexGotScrewedUp.com

that’s very fair, but it’s also more of a popular history than a scholarly book. i wanted something denser and i’m still waiting for someone to explain how late 20thC conservative christians went all in on post-freudean pseudoscientific gender stuff but idk if we’ll ever get it

I've some mid-20thC editions of the Manual of Seamanship (my dad was Navy), so googled that title for the 19thC and got this, among others. It might give you categories of knowledge needed by those beginning the progression, making other material easier to evaluate.
The Boy's Manual of Seamanship and Gunnery: compiled for the use of The Training Ships of the Royal Navy 1871.

(and in fairness my ancestors' rabbinical courts of the time accepted testimony of witnessing magical acts, which really bugged the 20thc historians - no spectral evidence though)

I don't understand 21stC authorities tolerating folks in masks.
Why aren't masked folks arrested for wearing a mask?
Why are they hiding their facial features?
Why don't they want their identity known?
Why are they wearing black?
In 20thC they would be 0 tolerance & nicked in a moment.
