#24VAC
😬 ok, well, 50V caps for 24VAC (33.6V peak). I have to assure myself that capacitor tech changed a LOT

Just finished wiring in an isolation relay and 24vac source to make my 50s era wall heater work with a 2025 smart thermostat 🫠

24VAC adapter plugged in… and it works now, wall thermostat included.

if you see this, post a transformer

turns out they have 24VAC motors! not sure if I should use relays, triacs, or make a VFD!

Are you going to use that ac coil contactor on dc?
About half the impedance is reactance, so your 24vac relay will melt at 24vdc because its basically got the resistance for a 12vdc relay. Twice the current is 4x the power.
:]

Well, the weekly robot was something of a fail. I had a bit of a delayed start trying to decide what to do with the 24VAC motors it uses, I had a issues with the controller power supply, the input was higher than my lego-brick adapters could accept. My dev environment also got messed up.
:/

Good news, the motors are just 24VAC. Bad news, the up/down motor isn't working :(

gah. and now, with the 24VAC power brick plugged in, the Hub is non-functional once more. no lights.

secured the new cables in the shed instead

What kind of heating/cooling system do you have? Is it 24VAC controlled? Multiple heating/cooling stages?

Do you want wifi, thread, zigbee, zwave, homekit, etc etc etc

There are a stupid number of things to consider. 🫠

Recently spent days debugging our home cooling system. Turned out that a fresh air damper was burning out its motor and drawing 5V from the 24VAC control lines. That didn't leave enough voltage to activate the compressor relay, but only when the thermostat was also charging its internal battery.

"Rue, your working on the weekly robot, right?"
"Errr, well no, I kind -this- cause it was bugging me..."

Capacitor dropper for 24VAC people, note that at higher currents the series caps start to stress out and get warm.

so we've still got to find a replacement cable, but while we've got the bad cable cleaned up and working again (for now) I'm now moving on to a stabilizer replenisher pump that is stuck on, even though the CPU thinks its not.

oh snag!
The rectified 24VAC is 33V, and the dc-dc converters I have aren't rated that high! ugh!
Its a silly problem there must be a million ways I can solve it...

USRoboticsin modeemeissa myös 24VAC, toiminee. Niitähän kunnon kettuleilla on nurkissa 😍

Even getting tagged by 24VAC on the hand will make you move unconsciously before you realized what happened

Reminded me of fixing a friends furnace a few months ago, the 24vac transformer went bad, didn’t have an exact replacement but there was room to fit a generic 24vac replacement I had. (Bottom right) (dead one is bottom left, left it there incase anyone ever wanted to order an exact replacement.)

I'm assuming the not working now bit is because of the DC vs AC finally catching up. 24VAC power supply thus coming tomorrow.

wired up the light in my garden to the irrigation controller so now i can switch it on/off via home assistant :)

(it's the new contactor on the top right in the box. the second contactor is as yet unused, idk what i'll do with it)

52 robots in 52 weeks,
ok, the yellow is 24vac power and the other one is all the signals.
I need to make the controller board this connects to!
