Rockweed Isopods (Pentidotea wosnesenskii) are just chunky little friends with little graspy legs that like to grasp stuff, like algae & fingers & other rockweed isopods. They also come in many fun colors, so festive! #Crustmas #25DaysofCrustmas

It’s #Crustmas and that can only mean we start #25DaysofCrustmas today. So to start us off we have a Phyllognathia ceratophthalma - which some people call the Spiny Tiger Shrimp although my favourite common name is the Bongo shrimp. They feed on brittle stars and form bonded pairs.

Going freshie fresh for #Crustmas - it's the freshwater California Clam Shrimp (Cyzicus californicus)! They're endemic to California & found in vernal pools – their eggs can withstand drying out & can hang out in the dirt waiting for the pools to fill up again. Little taco shrimp! #25DaysofCrustmas

Day 7 of #25DaysofCrustmas and we have a shrimp that I believe may be a type of Hamodactylus. Often adopting the colour of its gorgonian host.

Day 22 of #25DaysofCrustmas and we have a little Porcelain crab that lives on a Sea Pen in the Philippines. They tend to hang off the sides wafting their feathery appendages to catch tiny food in the current.

So day 20 of #25DaysofCrustmas and we have a Caprellidae Amphipod - otherwise known as the Skeleton Shrimp. It’s always great seeing these tiny critters - especially the females when they have a dozen babies hanging off their bodies.

So it’s day 2 of #25DaysofCrustmas - and we have a teeny tiny Crustacean called Idiomysis tsurnamali from the Red Sea. This little mysis shrimp hangs around in swarms near anemones - and are a pain to photograph.

Day 3 of #25DaysofCrustmas brings us Thor amboinensis aka the sexy shrimp. Normally found in groups on small carpet anemones. This one is from the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia.

Barnacles are excellent at hide and seek. They spend their adult lives in acorn-like shells and use their cirri (feathery appendages) to catch food. Their cirri are modified crustacean legs. Imagine trying to catch food with your legs while doing a headstand. Would that count as leg day? 🤔
