The overhead lighting in the Odeon is flickering at 25hz. I don't like that

So, *another* french Olitec modem, slightny newer SelfMemory 56000 after a factory resest decided that it was okay wiht the 55 volt rms 25hz signal from the GrandStream and started printing `RING` in the serial console!
I remove some of the good I have to say about it. It generates a 20 or 25hz signal, which my old OLITEC modem (French made!) does not understand

It cannot automatically pickup a call as, is, you need to use a ATA command. :-/
This is a useless information for most people, but I am very happy about the ringer circuit in a GrandStream HT813. It seems very happy to ring an old mechanical french analog phone, which expect anything between like 50 to 90 volts AC?

Does a better job than the phone output of the Freebox Ultra.

In 1989, Navy Cold War hydrophones picked up a whale calling at 52Hz, far above the 15-25Hz range other whales use. Tracked every year since, its call has never been answered by another of its kind. A signal broadcast at a frequency nobody else speaks.

We found a beta-band (15-25Hz) right frontoparietal network that was over-represented in the resting state in individuals who had recently taken psychedelics, primarily in the first week after the dose.

What stops the GNSS? Jamming? There should be plenty of constellation coverage.

I’m also curious about the cost factor - I’ve built streaming telemetry devices with 25Hz GNSS and 6-axis IMU for under $75 (with sub-250mm hAcc and 1.3 pDOP). I’ll admit there may be aspects I’m ignorant of, however.

>Obviously it doesn't look choppy to us.

Because you'd never seen a framerate over 25Hz. A kid who grew up on 100+Hz frame rates will see our analog rates as choppy.

I do think your hypothesis might play some role. Also the serial nature of video and phosphor fade plays some role. 24Hz cinema...

built purrbox: three sliders (cat size, room temp, cat mood) drive a Web Audio purr modeled on the real ~25Hz laryngeal pulse — cold cats shiver, hot cats pant, grumpy cats growl, ecstatic cats trill.

built it 🎉 — https://purrbox.bisks.net

16-2/3Hz, 16.7Hz, 25Hz, 50Hz, and 60Hz. It's really fascinating. I find it interesting that AC frequencies change mid-span in some sections simply because the overhead catenary lines were electrified at different times in the course of history. e.g just east of NYC Penn Station, in Queens:

Floor height would seem to be a problem with FLIRTs. Even the British units are a solid foot short of level boarding here. MN really dropped the ball not ordering some of the M8s with 25hz transformers.

Today the other option would be ACS64s retrofitted with DC-link tech and an Airo APV-like car.

I will now finally be able to play Duck Hunt on the NES. Also will be hooking it up to my PC for online multiplayer games as a Standard Definition CRT monitor with 25Hz runs smoother than an OLED with 144Hz

Objectively 11kV AC 25hz is better for long distance…but 3kV DC was more familiar to them and certainly would’ve been more sustainable than extending the 3rd rail
July 29, 2026 at 11:53 PM
That's a good point, what voltage and frequency would they have used to electrify their network? Supposedly CUT's 3kVDC was initially conceived as a model for wider-spread electrification. 11kVAC 25hz would be a possibility, and later studies contemplated commercial frequency power.
