2chan itself, of course, was an offshoot of 2channel. and there's also a little-remembered bit of ugliness-- a bunch of goons started posting on 2chan in both Japanese and English... and a LOT of the 2chan userbase didnt want 'em there. IIRC there were even bans on overseas IP addresses for a time.

so I would say that the early driving force of 4chan was a) a fascination with JP imageboards in general and 2chan specifically, and b) not being allowed to join the 2chan community because the netto-ya moderators there didnt want foreigners posting

there's definitely some truth here, but from my perspective as someone who was active on both sites, 4chan specifically started because the dorks in ADTRW (the SA anime forum; guess what it stands for!) became enamored with 2chan and some of em decided to start an English-language version.
4chan only exists because people wouldn't stop talking about Azumanga Daioh on something awful to the point they had to start a new site. It's also where the term "waifu" comes from. Azumanga's importance is slept on.

This ‘4chan’ was originally modeled after Japan’s ‘2chan,’ which was basically the original hangout spot for Japan’s hardcore weirdo otaku, and it caused all kinds of big problems in Japan too. If I remember right, that’s how it was🙄🤔
