The true path of the 2d20 GM
November 3, 2026 at 12:28 PM
What the actual fuck, how come some sort of election news from a former colony is out performing my new 2d20 house rule?

Priorities, people

(also, yay and good job y'all)

Tbh, I haven't seen a 2d20 rulebook that I would ever call GM friendly. I have ran Fallout and Achtung Cthulhu, and each one was pretty punishing. Dreams and Machines feels ooookaaaayish? I flicked through Dune and started having 2d20 PTSD so put it down.

Leave me alone!

(although seriously, a new one came out recently and it could've been an interesting shout if I wasn't now fully committed to Infinity 2d20)

Well, I hope you've downloaded the SRD.

It is invaluable when trying to parse 2D20 variants

Shit. I think I like Infinity 2d20

The Cardinal Rule of 2d20 systems is that you must *always* read / play the Starter Set first, and then the opaque and byzantine rulebook will actually make total sense.

It's funny how this works with every damn game in Modiphius' line.

Right, I've now read all the core rules, the action rules, and all of the extra little rules dotted throughout the equipment chapter.

I like Infinity 2d20. I'm going to use it for my military sci-fi idea. I just need to hack the buying rules and expand talent trees for different weapons

They've never gotten this right and I don't believe they care to.

Is Dreams 2d20? I thought it was a new system.

2d20 does a lot of great things, but it feels like Modiphius is unable to get out of it's own way sometimes.
October 31, 2026 at 1:22 PM
to be fair, it's partly that I've never run a 2d20 before, and partly because I'm also assessing it's ability to be hacked to pieces for a specific idea I have, and it's partly because the rules are opaque and written in different places the bastards

I've been analysing Infinity 2d20 weapons to help me come up with meaningful talents for individual weapon types rather than just a single "ballistics" tree

To my surprise, once you cut out the funky weird stuff like Adhesive Cannons, they just have "pistol", "rifle", "shotgun". Nice and simple
November 3, 2026 at 12:17 PM
This was the same with Fallout 2d20. Scavenging and crafting was SUCH a fucking chore it completely shut the game down for us. That and the 17,000 tables of armour, ammo types, magazines and books, mods etc.

My second Infinity 2d20 house rule - new weapon-specific talent tree for the Ballistics skill, to add a bit more differentiation into military scifi soldiers (my new one vs old one)
November 4, 2026 at 12:14 AM
I have found it a bit of a monster to get to the table, but like it all the same. Ideally I would preserve much of the flavour and lighten the core chassis by mapping it onto a Homeworld 2D20 sweet spot.

But I can't be arsed.

I once more declare, use the SRD, drop what you dislike and borrow what you do.

The core 2d20 engine is reasonable, the devil is in the details...and the layout!

I forgot there was a 2D20 RPG. I've always found the Cyberpunk/anime stylings of the settings really appealing, but the miniatures game rules give me a migraine. A 2D20 lense could make it much more accessible.

There’s a lot of unintended or clearly not playtested effects in the early 2d20 rules. Conan and Infinity are loaded with them.

I really think fans should put together an update or errata and house rules.
