Almost let the smoke out of the wires of 300C yesterday. Luckily no damage, and it was a perfect excuse to clean up the wiring.

This is stupid and dangerous advice. Do not follow it.
NFPA 1971 qualified gloves are only going to let you *very briefly* handle objects up to 300C and provide *flash* protection for up to around 500C.
Tear gas canisters burn at 700C.

Tip: use structural firefighting gloves. They have heat shielding/padding on the grip surfaces, for grabbing flaming timbers and stuff.
Welding gloves only have heat padding on the back (to shield your hand from sparks). The grip area is un-padded because you are only expected to hold a cool handle
