It was a very difficult car to get in and out of. Right up there with the 300SL. Not as bad as silly stuff like an Ariel Atom or ick, Jeep Wrangler though.

300SLは欲しくても買えなかったらしく、ACエースカも買ったらしいので、ほぼモダンクラシックス制覇ですね。

Sophia Loren's 1956 Cinema Rally Participation and Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Incident
In April 1956, the 21-year-old rising star Sophia Loren participated in the 'Rally del Cinema' (Cinema Rally), a highly publicized celebrity car race across Italy that blended post-war cinematic glamour with mid-century sports car culture. During the Rome to San Remo leg on April 9, 1956, massive crowds of ardent fans swarmed her vehicle. The crush of the crowd grew so intense that it actually cracked her car's windshield, leaving the actress visibly overwhelmed inside the cockpit. Later in the rally, near Acqui Terme in Piedmont, Loren briefly went off the road. While it was only a minor incident with no injuries, iconic photos emerged of her pushing her own Mercedes-Benz, cementing the event in pop culture history. The rally perfectly captured the vibrant, theatrical spirit of 1950s Italian motor and cinema culture. The event was part of a larger trend of celebrity-driven automotive events that combined the glamour of Hollywood with the excitement of motorsports, reflecting the cultural zeitgeist of the era. The photos from this rally have become iconic, showcasing not only Loren's early career but also the intersection of film, fashion, and automotive culture in the 1950s. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, a symbol of automotive innovation and luxury, was a fitting choice for a rising star like Loren, who was already becoming a household name in the entertainment industry. The incident with the windshield and the subsequent photo of Loren pushing her car have become enduring symbols of the era's unique blend of celebrity and automotive culture. This event remains a significant moment in the history of both cinema and automotive culture, highlighting how celebrities and their vehicles became intertwined in the public imagination during the mid-20th century.

***this 300SL is actually a 2009 SLK V6, rebodied and styled to look like a 300SL. Helps that it and the original share an identical wheel base

Hmmmmm . . . . be a "real American" or live in a Tuscan villa with a vineyard & olive grove, a gullwing Mercedes 300SL in the driveway, and a personal chef?

Decisions, decisions . . . . NOT! 🤭

I've driven all of them and the Pagoda is the best of the SLs in my opinion - including the 300SL. Shame about the ruined suspension on this one.

Right?!?? Like I was low key obsessed with the Mercedes 300SL Gull Wing when I spent a lot of time in Mercedes repair shops (we had a 20 yr old diesel) but those doors made sense and could be opened even when next to other cars!

I am excited to desperately but unsuccessfully look for a 300SL in the classifieds.
And maybe to build a rack car Range Rover Classic?
