#31Horrors4Halloween: 29. The Wolf of Snow Hollow. Enjoyable small-town “werewolf” procedural/drama. Always nice to be reminded how good Robert Forster was.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 9. Clearcut. Run, don’t walk to Shudder for this one. Graham Greene leaves it ALL on the screen here. A scathing, uncompromising movie that’s equal parts folk horror, rightful critique of colonialism & white saviorism, & a no longer so radical eco-message

#31Horrors4Halloween: 30. The Fort. Gotta support my @shortwavebooks.bsky.social publisher after all. Does exactly what I want a horror short to do…gives you just enough to leave you lingering with the expectations of more horror to come.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 20. The Exorcist III. Damn this movie rocks. Brad Dourif remains the horror GOAT. And his scenes with George C. Scott are masterful. There’s THE jump scare. And possessed old people. I loved it.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 10. The Abominable Dr. Phibes. More like the Incredible Dr. Vibes, right??? Loved this weird, campy Vincent Price flick. Absolutely bonkers.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 26. The Fly (1986). 1st time watching and, folks, this movie FUCKS. Toss in some body horror & it’s a Cronenbergian good time.

Also can we talk about how ridiculously good-looking Geena Davis & Jeff Goldblum (not so much by end) are in this movie? Cuz damn!

#31Horrors4Halloween: 27. The Conference. Big-time recommendation for this Swedish slasher about municipal employees at a team-building retreat who are killed off in delightfully gory fashion. Imagine The Office or Parks & Rec but with murders. Loved it.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 28. The Hoot Owl. Starts as standard low-low budget endeavor, mediocre/cringe acting & filmmaking. But once the slashering gets going…watch out. Fan-fucking-tastic gore & a BONKERS climax that you will not be prepared for. It’s…something.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 6. The Fields. Coming of age tale. Young boy on grandparents farm in 70s fearing Charles Manson’s Family maybe runs afoul of killer hippies in a forbidden cornfield. With an abandoned amusement park & a sinister ringmaster this is also very Bradbury-coded.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 25. He’s Watching. Highly recommend this found footage film on Tubi. Weird horror riffing on pandemic/parenting themes. Siblings left alone when parents sick with mystery plague. They make video journal but someone/something else is making a video of them.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 24. Tin & Tina. Spanish horror in one of my favorite subgenres: “look at these little weirdos.” Riffing on Rosemary’s Baby & The Omen, but it seems to turn it on its head by having God as the manipulating, vengeful presence.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 18. The Final Girls. Fun cast in this horror-comedy that’s basically Pleasantville in a slasher film. Malin Akerman & Taissa Farmiga carry the emotional weight & Thomas Middleditch plays the most @brianmcwriter.bsky.social coded character ever.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 14. Apartment 7A. Prequel to Rosemary’s Baby. Falls short of the original but not surprising as that’s one of the best. Still there’s much to enjoy especially the work of Dianne “I say the hottest shit but we sellin the” Wiest.

#31Horrors4Halloween 8. Milk & Serial. Recent social media hit on YouTube. This one really lived up to the hype for me. Weird prank bro YouTube culture given a Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer shine. Excited to see what Curry Barker does next.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 31. The Ripper. Sorry for the delay in wrapping this up. Turned out the real horror was here with us all along. Anyway, this is a schlocky, gory SOV horror with Tom Savini as Jack the Ripper. I enjoyed it wayyyy more than expected. It’s goofy but fun.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 23. Fatal Games. The second “star athletes getting killed off” 80s slasher following Graduation Day. This one is…fine. I mean you will get your fill of javelin-based killings. The “twist” at the end is every conservative sports boogeyman come to life though

#31Horrors4Halloween: 22. All the Kind Strangers. TV movie from the 70s about backwoods kids kidnapping strangers & forcing them to be their parents. These Made for TV movies are often hidden gems & this one qualifies. Fun cast led by Stacy Motherfuckin’ Keach.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 11. Monster. Nearly dialogue-less Indonesian horror film MONSTER. Young girl & classmate kidnapped by child killers. Strong dark fairy tale vibes. An interesting experiment as well!

#31Horrors4Halloween: 13. The Curse of Humpty Dumpty. Oh what’s this a trilogy of low-budget British supernatural slashers and this is part 1? I mean, look at this little freak, how could I resist???

#31Horrors4Halloween: 19. The Houses October Built (2011). NOT the more popular, more plot-heavy 2014 version apparently. This is more 98% haunted houses documentary, 2% plot. Fun if you dig haunted house attractions but otherwise skippable.
October 25, 2024 at 7:24 PM
#31Horrors4Halloween: 21. Hung Jury. Another SOV “masterpiece.” Nearly 2 hours long and boy do you feel every second of it. Eventually morphs into an “And Then There Were None”-style plot but boy does it take its sweet ass amateur hour time getting there.

#31Horrors4Halloween: 2. Evil Dead Rise. Gotta say, despite containing many of the elements this didn’t feel very Evil Dead-y to me. I think the humor didn’t land. That said, I think Alyssa Sutherland really swung for the fences & her creepy, sinister performance was a highlight.
October 6, 2024 at 2:31 AM
#31Horrors4Halloween: 16. Grim Reaper. OK, best thing about this one are the rip-off posters. If you want a movie about a guy in a Halloween mask whose backstory & motivation are mostly presented in promo materials & not the movie itself. Well you’re in “luck.”
October 23, 2024 at 9:25 PM
#31Horrors4Halloween: Oddity. After this & Caveat, Damian McCarthy is on my list of must-watch horror filmmakers. Atmosphere & terror by the boatload. Some genuine scares throughout.
October 3, 2024 at 1:17 PM
#31Horrors4Halloween 3. Knight Chills. SOV D&D slasher. Mazes & Monster but the obsessed gamer comes back as his knight character to get revenge. Schlock with surprisingly good moments of actual gameplay lol!
