I saw him twice. In 1998 as King Philip II in Bologna, sounding as wonderful as he did on the Solti recording 35years previously and in 2001 in Berlin as Gremlin with Freni as Tatiana (a bit past it by then tbh). Such a smooth bass sound and it lasted decades. Thanks for pointing this video out.

It’s breathtaking, honestly, to go to an area that, for my entire time in this city (>35years) has been industrial and thus off-limits. And more than that, it’s the way they daylighted the mouth of the Don. From polluted concrete channel to incredible wetland with impressive habitat restoration. 🩵
