panicking over a tiny nitrate spike to almost 40ppm and then remembering its also a planted tank and the plants need food too after doing a water change

Their detector had a 40ppm limit on cobalt, so frankly it'll get a non-detect in *most* soil.

They estimate that the initial deposition into the soil (during which there were rain events) wasn't the full 0,5-1cm, but a mere 2-5mm. Extremely confined to the surface.

The Ni, Co, and Mn were...

The study found arsenic too.

Lead and arsenic are also in soil, and rocks. It's everywhere naturally. Lead is 15-40ppm on average in soil, arsenic about 5ppm. We've worsened it in some places, in some cases greatly, but any sufficiently sensitive test will find lead and arsenic everywhere.

Tonight was water test & change night for my #aquarium :seas: and there’s something not quite right. After several weeks of being rock-solid stable, the water parameters are off. Small amounts of ammonia, pH 8.0, nitrites 1ppm, & nitrates at 40ppm. Nothing has changed as far as I can see. Fish

Huzzah! After about 3.5 weeks, I think that my tank has finally finished cycling (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen_cycle#Marine_nitrogen_cycle). Let’s see if I can keep it stable.

pH = 7.0
NH3 + NH4 = 0 ppm
NO3 = 20 ppm
NO2 = 0 ppm
CaCO3 = 40ppm (just about acceptable)
CaCO = 140 ppm

Trying but just can’t seem to get our measurements below ~40PPM — no one can go down there today. :/

It’s a pool FFS!

Add a chlorine source, and treat the water with cyanuric acid (AKA “conditioner”, CYA — it keeps the chlorine from getting neutralized by sunlight).

Target values:
CL: 5ppm (shock to 10-15 ppm on signs of algae)
CYA: 40ppm

Pro tip: Filtration to remove dead organic matter.

The potential problem is not with the remaining chlorine, but with the trichloromethane formed as result of chlorination. The study cited in The Guardian's article sets the 'safe' concentration to be around 40ppm, while curent norm is 80ppm. 1/2
