When I talked to former 4Kids and Nintendo employees for Monster Kids, my book about "Pokemania," the funny thing was that a lot of them agreed with me when I said that Pokémon is universal. It's collecting. It's monsters. It's a little power fantasy and a coming of age tale. We loooove that.

Pretty much. The biggest offenders were kids' shows, and companies like 4Kids and Saban were basically changing things for that specific market.

100 times, this. People rag on 4Kids and Saban, but like, a lot of the edits made were the way shows like Pizza Cats, Pokemon, and Voltron got on TV in the first place.
The fact that Star Blazers and Robotech credited their JP staffs was seen as revolutionary for a reason.

But if you ever look back at this time period and feel baffled by some of the creative or marketing decisions, you have to understand that they aren't just trying to appeal to children. They're selling to the nervous older folks that had the wallets.

Hating on dubs is ESPECIALLY hysterical to me these days, because the dubs are accurate and fantastic and the VAs and everyone involved cares so much and is so passionate, I can't imagine! I remember well the reign of 4kids, we'd have KILLED (sent someone to another dimension) to have it so good. xD

Looking back yeah 4Kids really did carry ALOT with OS. The character writing and group chemistry is abysmal when you take off the rose tinted glasses and witness the story in a different lens outside of 4Kids dialogue which admittedly is super witty and creative to help mask the poor writing
