Yep. A huge chunk of the institutional right is 501(c)(3)s and 501(c)(4)s that have no organic support whatsoever. Just billionaire-funded make-work jobs for ideologues.
Listen to this National Review writer. (Although I would prefer it if people supported the First Amendment on principle, not just out of self-interest.)

Tablet Magazine, run by the tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit Nextbook Inc., is telling its Instagram followers not to vote for Zohran Mamdani.

The IRS explicit forbids 501(c)(3) organizations from "directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign."

As the Trump administration threatens them, liberal nonprofits have been quietly preparing to do everything from surrendering 501(c)(3) status to relocating outside the US.

Donald Trump announces that they’re taking away Harvard’s tax exempt status.

The likelihood of Harvard actually losing its 501(c)(3) status is equal to that of Donald actually weighing 224 pounds…

Starting a 501(c)(3) which does nothing but provide Republicans legislators with framed posters displaying the definition of “treason” for them to put in their offices.
Rep. Randy Fine: "The idea the Democrats will keep DHS closed -- it's as close to an act of treason as I can imagine"

If religious 501(c)3 organizations are now exempt, the same should apply to every 501(c)(3) organization. Looking forward to the campaigning of the Gates Foundation, Smithsonian, Red Cross, Planned Parenthood, and others to start endorsing.

BREAKING: IRS announces exemption to 1954 ban on 501(c)3 orgs engaging in political activity—now allows churches & houses of worship to endorse political candidates.

The wall separating religion & state is collapsed. It is not hyperbole to state that we are on the footsteps of Christian theocracy.

This is flatly illegal. The plain text of the law says that any person who works for any 501(c)(3) nonprofit is eligible. There is ZERO authority for limiting eligibility based on the work such nonprofit does. They WILL lose the lawsuit. Even so, this is making so many people’s lives harder.
In a move that could upend a popular federal program, President Donald Trump issued an executive order Friday directing his education secretary to revise eligibility requirements for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
Trump signs order to limit who gets public service student loan forgiveness
The president says some nonprofit organizations that qualify for the program are engaging in illegal activity, without offering any proof.

Nomani is notorious for this kind of faux journalism.

When she reached out (for already public information), she conveniently left out that she’s the *senior contributor* at The Federalist, as if we didn’t have Google.

This was our response: would it shock you to learn she didn’t publish it?

- Attacking nonprofit organizations particularly those promoting free information, civil rights, or academic freedom by trying to strip their 501(c)(3) protections.
- Flooding media and education spaces with accusations of “bias,” “propaganda,” or “treason” to justify censorship or funding cuts.

The Chairman of the Kennedy Center isn't even a federal employee. It's an independent 501(c)3. That's not a thing.

The reconciliation bill has a provision in it that would allow the IRS to revoke nonprofits 501(c)(3) statuses for alleged support of terrorism and let me tell you, if that becomes law they will 100% use that for political punishment. Without any doubt.
Worth noting that this escalation of the attack against Harvard is yet another example of the admin repurposing the "terrorism" framing to tar and persecute domestic opponents.

Wrote about the admin's broader repurposing of the terrorism narrative last month.

Time coming soon for mass petition to IRS to change Heritage Foundation designation from a 501(c)(3) --which allows tax-deductible donations -- to a political 501(c)(4), which does not.

Some have already registered complaints to IRS about Heritage Foundation for Project 2025.
