“We were 8th at the start of April lads. Then we went on a run. 6 wins in a row. We scored 20 goals. Me? Just 9 of them. We only needed a draw at Hull but we won 4-1. And that’s how we got promoted in ‘56” #456Book

Sunday night tune…Rip it up, Bill Haley. Hard to believe now but in 1956,this was the equivalent of the Sex Pistols in 76. A call to arms for the first ever ‘teenagers’.Cut-throat razors ripping up cinema seats and dancing in the aisles shocking the country. #456Book #50sLeeds #LUFC #ALAW

Leeds players prepare for the big promotion decider against Bristol Rovers 21/4/56- Bristol 2nd, Leeds 3rd with a game in hand. A win would make Leeds favourites for the 2nd promotion place and 50,000 were expected at Elland Road. #456Book

Charles United was the name the press gave #LUFC’s 1956 promotion winning team. King John scored 29 goals that season even though he only played as striker from the end of October. He was just too good for division 2! #456Book

Another young hopeful, starting out in his career and hoping to make a name for himself at Leeds but with a National Service call up on the horizon. Wonder what became of him?!

Never seen this before- the famous photo of John Charles and a gang of schoolboys at the gate of his in-laws house in Middleton Park Grove, revisited 50 years later…

The King’s return? I’m guessing this is a late 50s visit from John Charles after he’d gone to Italy. Leeds players are, I think, Grenville Hair, Gerry Francis, Big Jack, ??, Archie Gibson?, Chris Crowe, George Meek. Not sure who the other bloke in the suit is?

Out-takes from the Pathé News ‘John Charles transfer’ newsreel. The Gentle Giant looking unsurprisingly embarrassed at being made to say goodbye to Peggy multiple times then self consciously finger his Wales mementos. And it was all cut from the film!

King John meets Sir Bobby.

After the match between the Italian League and the English league at the San Siro in Nov 1960. JC was at Juventus and Robson was playing for West Brom. The Italian league won 4-2.

After the match,1950s- I thought they were early leavers heading past the cricket ground to the New Peacock but the football special tram is heading back empty to Elland Road which suggests they might be stragglers. Perhaps they’d hung around for King John’s autograph?

Leeds away at Birmingham in 1951 in what appears to be an all blue kit. We didn’t start to play in all blue with gold trim until 1955 so could this be an early change strip maybe? Birmingham would be a strange place to use all blue if so!

A couple of photos from Archie Gibson’s collection that his grandson sent me. Mid 50s #LUFC team training in the gym. I can see a young Jack Charlton at the back,George Meek, Eric Kerfoot ,but no John Charles. Was the gym in the old west stand I wonder?

1953 style click-bait! Makes it sound like King John was blinded by Elland Road’s new-fangled high-tech floodlights. Some clubs were resistant to playing under lights initially- Leeds had wanted to use them for the 1956 cup game against Cardiff but they refused.

Archie Gibson’s grandson has sent me some more previously unseen photos from his Grandad’s 1950s collection. Looks like a brewery trip here with John Charles stirring the mix. Would BB have been Bentley’s Brewery maybe?

Anyone recognise this Leeds player? Made 21 appearances between 1959-61 and later became a vicar! Good shot of the Scratching Shed too when it looks to have been popular with families and kids.

Another of the rediscovered Archie Gibson photos- Big Jack, Jimmy Dunn, Harold Brook, Gibson, Bob Forrest (all my guesses!) with unknown theatre cast, potentially in the Wrens pub across from the Grand? c1957

Another of Archie Gibson’s previously unseen photos sent by his grandson. I assume it’s the team’s new boot delivery after the 1956 west stand fire. I think (please correct me!) Jack Overfield, Roy Wood, Jimmy Dunn(?), and Gibson in the burnt shell of the stand.

This is one of the intriguing photos from the Archie Gibson collection. Archie with Jack and JC, not sure of the other lad? No caption so the sticking plasters are a mystery. Heading injuries from a heavy laced ball maybe?
