No coin issued may bear the image of a living former or current President - 31 U.S. Code 5112
October 3, 2025 at 11:51 PM
This coin is illegal. The laws of our Congress specifically ban coinage depicting a living president (31 U.S. Code § 5112).

What better metaphor could there be for the numb shattering of our constitutional order, than a $1 coin being sold to the American people for $10?

This move is technically illegal, as 31 U.S. Code § 5112 proclaims that no coin shall “bear the image of a living former or current President,” until at least two years after their death. trib.al/FTvz6Mn

I don't know who needs to hear this, but according to 31 U.S. Code § 5112 n2E, it is ILLEGAL to post a president on a coin, unless they've been dead for 2 years.

Sadly, these stupid Trump coins seem to be legal under 31 USC 5112(y)(1)(C). There's a ban on living people on the reverse of such a coin per 31 USC 5112(aa)(1) but apparently no ban on the front. And the 1866 law banning living people applies only to bills.

Under 31 U.S. Code § 5112, in the subsection governing design of coins, there is a clause: “...no portrait of a living person may be included in the design of any coin issued under this subsection.”

No U.S. coin has ever featured a sitting president. The law specifically bars it to avoid authoritarian vibes. Think about that.

This is incorrect. That language refers only to a specific 2007 commemorative coin program authorized under 31 USC 5112(n). That's why the quote from 31 USC 5112(n)(2)(E) refers to coins minted "under this subsection"—i.e. subsection (n).

(It's still outrageous, but it appears to be legal.)
