The Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as Messier 51a, M51a, or NGC 5194, is an interacting grand-design spiral galaxy. In the Catalogue of Named Galaxies, it is called Typhon Canum Venaticorum, after the Greek god Typhon.

This image from the James Webb Space Telescope captures the majestic spiral galaxy NGC 5194, also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy. NGC 5194 is located about 27 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. The image was taken by Webb's Near-InfraRed Camera (NIRCam). The dark red regions trace the filamentary warm dust, while colors of red, orange, and yellow show the signatures of ionized gas from the recently formed star clusters. The prominent spiral arms are thought to be partially caused by the gravitational influence of NGC 5194's smaller companion galaxy NGC 5195. The interaction between these two galaxies is what has earned them the nickname "The Whirlpool Galaxy".
