• 4-star hikes • 7 to 8 mile options • Moderate | Gain 2,200 to 2,700 feet • Albany, NH | White Mountains .   52WAV   _South Peak views of Passaconaway & Whiteface._ Mount Paugus sits quietly in the shadow of its more famous neighbor, Mount Chocorua, and tends to get overlooked by hikers heading for bigger names in the Sandwich Range. That's a shame, because this loop turns out to be one of the most enjoyable hikes you can experience in the area. We chose a looping trail that begins on the side of Route 113A and combines Big Rock Cave Trail, Old Paugus Trail and a section of Lawrence Trail before returning down Cabin Trail. Starting out counterclockwise on Big Rock Cave Trail the going is surprisingly easy. The lower elevations are gentle and largely free of rocks - more of a pleasant forest stroll than a mountain climb. Before things get more serious, make a point of stopping at Big Rock Cave. It's formed from massive mansion-sized granite monoliths that tumbled down the mountainside long ago and formed a human-sized talus cave beneath. Along the way you'll pass a rocky slide up a gully full of fallen trees that looks more intimidating than it actually is, partly because halfway up the trail takes a sharp right and thankfully detours away. An occasional moderately steep granite cap and a couple of modest scrambles remain to be tackled before you close in on the summit, but nothing to elevate this trail into a 'hard' category. Mount Paugus' wide, domed South Peak is ringed with trees and offers only partial views, but walk just a short way to the south down its granite face, and unobstructed views reveal themselves. Perhaps the most impressive views are westward toward the pointed Mt Passaconaway. Distant views south also reveal the Belknap Mountains and rolling hills in between. _Counterclockwise up Big Rock Cave Trail first._ Worth noting is that Mount Paugus' actual summit isn't connected to any maintained trail. Some hikers like to bushwhack over for the bragging rights, but we opted to stay on trail this time around. We've marked the true summit on our map in case you're curious, and most people who do visit it approach from the west side of South Peak, where the trail passes closest. Though a counterclockwise route of the Big Rock Cave and Cabin Trail loop is preferred to tackle the steeper climbs on the way up, coming back down the Lawrence Trail section does require some care. Loose, fine glacial till makes footfalls on the steepest trail angles a little uncertain. Once you're back on the Cabin Trail portion, things settle down again into an easy, uneventful walk back toward the trailhead. We haven't yet hiked the Kelley Trail or Bolles Trail routes up Mount Paugus, but thanks to OpenStreetMap we're able to show both on our map and provide GPX downloads. Named for a Pequawket chief, this peak draws hikers to its exposed granite slopes and offers views of grand panoramic landscapes. The mountain sits within the White Mountain National Forest and most approaches involve steady climbing through northern hardwood forests that transition to spruce and fir at higher elevations. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky as you gain altitude. The upper mountain is characterized by open ledges and slabs. Thanks to Open Street Map we're able to share maps and GPX navigation files for all routes to the summit, and we plan to expand this article as we explore the rest of them. If you're pursuing the 52 With-A-View Challenge, any trail to the summit of Mount Chocorua qualifies. Just be sure to include Middle Sister as well, since it's also on the list. For those tackling New Hampshire’s Terrifying 25, note that the Carter Ledge Trail must be completed in its entirety, starting from the Carter Ledge Trailhead, to meet the challenge requirements. We have links to both challenges at the foot of this page. _Peak previews from the road, across Chocorua Lake._ ⬤ **Piper-Weetamoo Loop** The Piper Trail ascends steadily through cover of forest before steepening over rocky terrain toward treeline. Breaking out from the tree-line, Piper Trail's exposed ledges provide superb southerly vistas to enjoy as you continue to the summit. Descending via Liberty Trail, you pass the Jim Liberty cabin site, where once stood a historic summit hotel hosting Victorian-era tourists. The trail drops steeply before joining Hammond Trail's gentler grade through mixed forest. Finally, Weetamoo Trail winds back to the trailhead. Terrain is generally easy or moderate, though rocky sections on Piper's ledges and Chocorua's summit can be particularly challenging in wet and icy conditions. There's also a section of Liberty Trail close to the summit that required us to butt-scoot our way down. _Expect shaded, forest trails until the higher elevations._ Piper Trailhead is operated by White Mountain National Forest which requires a cash payment, placed in an envelope and deposited in an iron ranger. Interagency passes are also accepted, such as the White Mountain Annual Pass and the National Parks Pass. The trailhead has a large parking lot, though this can still fill up quickly on weekends and holidays. • 5-star hikes • 6 to 9 mile options • Moderate | Gain 2,560 to 2,810 feet • North Conway, NH | White Mountains .   NHFT      52WAV    _This 1951 fire lookout tower operated until 1968._ Pine needles soften the first steps of our ascent up the Kearsarge North Trail to one of New Hampshire’s finest fire lookout tower peaks. The trail begins gently from Hurricane Mountain Road, but its character soon shifts as rocks and roots become more prominent, shaping the moderate climb ahead. After around 1.7 miles of trail the forest canopy begins to thin, revealing granite slabs that offer glimpses southward through the trees. These fleeting views hint at the sweeping panoramas that await at the summit, where the landscape opens completely. The final approach grows noticeably rockier, though the terrain never requires scrambling. Larger than most New Hampshire fire towers and sporting an outdoor balcony where you can find the best views, this building is well maintained and hikers are free to make use of it for overnight stays. This is one of over twenty standing fire towers in New Hampshire, all of which are mapped and linked on our Trailspotting Fire Tower List. Consider extending your hike to the neighboring peak of Bartlett Mountain, where you'll find much more solitude and even more views. An out-and-back trek from the unmarked Kearsarge North Trail junction is 1.3 miles and 230 feet of elevation. Alternatively you can return down the pretty Bartlett Mountain Trail on a looping route we've shown on our map as the 'Two Peaks Route'. Marginally steeper than the main trail, we found Bartlett Mountain Trail to be prettier and more verdant, with additional great distant viewpoints. _Hiking up the moderate Kearsarge North Trail._ Parking at the Hurricane Mountain Road trailhead accommodates about ten vehicles, making early arrival or afternoon timing advisable to secure a space. Please park closely to other visitors to maximize opportunities for the most number of vehicles. We have not yet hiked the Weeks Brook Trail that works its way up the eastern flanks of Kearsarge North, but thanks to Open Street Map data we're able to include it here. We'll update our review once we've found the time to hike this alternate route. The parking area accommodates several vehicles, providing convenient access to this moderately easy summit hike. The trail leads us up the southern flanks of Blueberry Mountain through mixed forest terrain. The route maintains a steady but manageable grade as we climb through the wooded landscape. Views begin to open just past the halfway point when granite slabs start to replace the soil-covered the route ahead. These exposed rock sections signal our approach to more open terrain and hint at the panoramas awaiting us near the summit. As we approach the summit, we take a right turn to reach the domed peak of Blueberry Mountain. Blueberry Mountain is actually a smaller summit on the side of Jeffers Mountain within the broader Benton Range, though there's no established trail leading to Jeffer's higher peak. The trail offers a satisfying combination of forest hiking and exposed granite sections, making it suitable for hikers seeking a moderate challenge with rewarding views. The return journey follows the same route back to the trailhead, completing a straightforward out-and-back adventure in New Hampshire's western mountains. _Moosilauke's peaks dominate the eastern skyline._ There is also another, lesser-known route that approaches the summit from the north on an alternate section of Blueberry Mountain Trail via Page Road. Though we've not yet explored this route, thanks to Open Street Map we're able to include it on our map and share with you the GPX navigation file. As we progress, the westerly views begin to unfold behind us. Turning around during this section reveals distant landscapes that gradually expand, rewarding those who pause to look back.
