The racket rolls on: Trump revives the missile defence grift, and Musk is poised to cash in Précis of Joe Cirincione’s article Musk does not need to be in the room — he already owns the playbook On May 20, Trump pitched his new ❝Golden Dome❞ space weapons system, a rehash of Reagan’s failed Strategic Defence Initiative — but this time with a $25 billion jumpstart and promises of a $175 billion total spend. Unsurprisingly, Elon Musk’s companies are already lined up to profit handsomely. While Musk has receded from Washington’s foreground, his proximity to power persists in the machinery of influence and procurement. SpaceX, Palantir, and Anduril — all run by or linked to Trump-friendly elites — are already jockeying for design and launch contracts reportedly worth up to $10 billion in the first phase alone. A sham built on 60 years of snake oil Missile defence has always been a bonanza for defence contractors — not a credible strategy. Since 1962, the U.S. has squandered over $531 billion on a series of ❝ineffective missile defence schemes,❞ most of them dead ends. Reagan’s fantasy of a space shield morphed into a series of ever-costlier failures, culminating in today’s feeble 44 interceptors in Alaska and California — so bad the Pentagon just shelled out $18 billion to start from scratch. No system exists, anywhere, that can reliably stop intercontinental ballistic missiles, especially when adversaries can overwhelm or spoof any detection system with ease. Trump’s magical thinking meets Musk’s opportunism Trump now claims ❝super technology❞ will provide near-total protection from all threats, including hypersonic and cruise missiles. Experts scoff. The CBO estimates the real cost at over $831 billion over 20 years, with no guarantee it will work. But it does not have to. As long as the contracts keep flowing, the system’s effectiveness is irrelevant. Contractors profit whether or not the tech performs. That is the entire point. The hustle: pump, hype, dump, repeat Musk’s orbiting grift takes this to the next level. SpaceX wants to control the ❝custody layer❞ of the system — thousands of surveillance and possibly interceptor satellites. According to Reuters, insiders describe the acquisition push as abnormal and deferential to Musk due to his government entanglements. There is even talk of a Starlink-style subscription model where the U.S. leases Golden Dome satellites from Musk, effectively handing him ongoing control over America’s defence backbone. A national security hazard sold as protection Congressional Democrats —42 of them— are calling foul. Their letter demands a DoD ethics probe, raising alarms over potential conflicts of interest, corrupt procurement practices, and even criminal violations if Musk is profiting from government decisions he influenced. Their concern is not academic: Musk has already withheld Starlink services in Ukraine for political reasons. Granting him the keys to a missile shield turns a tech tycoon into a shadow SecDef. Missile defence was never about defence — it’s a Ponzi scheme for Pentagon contractors From Reagan to Trump, the script remains unchanged: dream big, promise impossible tech, hand out huge contracts, then start over when it fails. Trump’s ❝Golden Dome❞ is not a defence strategy — it is a golden parachute for Elon Musk, Lockheed Martin, and a new cohort of MAGA-aligned war profiteers.
