#850mb
At 850mb, yes. But at the surface it could be a fog bowl.

In fact, this will approach the Jun 2021 PacNW/BC heat event in terms of meteorological anomalousness (though not, fortunately, in terms of absolute surface temperatures. It is still *March*, after all!) Western snowpack, however, will plummet at an unprecedented pace.

As if the cool air mass ending August wasn't impressive enough, a highly amplified western North American ridge is likely to transport a much cooler airmass into CONUS to start September, with impressive probabilities for well below normal heights & 850mb temps:

It will likely be just as unusual as the bonkers 2021 Pacific NW heatwave.
The map from @burgwx shows 850mb (5,000 ft) temperature records. The magenta shows where this heat will break records - Almost everywhere - through early next week. 2/

Not only does that break the all-time monthly 850mb record for March (which was just set earlier this week!), but it also beats the record for April, too. It's just one more way to put the sheer scale of this heat wave into context beyond just s... https://x.com/NWSBayArea/status/2035083758437609896

...the next batch of colder air is loading up, ready to enter S. Ontario early next week, (blah) Latest NAM20K model, 850mb temps (5kft. up) Cold temps dark blue/purple, added the mid-level heights/flow. The black line=0C/32F at 850mb. #onwx #onstorm
January 11, 2025 at 12:07 AM
Where's the cold air? -I know it's the GFS, & it's waaaaay past its reliability at 384 hrs.-but, Euro, CMC, ensembles tell the same story. Anyway,-Colour fill is temps at 850mb (~5K ft.)+500mb HGTS/flow. Black line=0C at 850mb, blue=below 0C -lot's of warmth still #onwx #onstorm

Your up coming week S. Ontario - Warm daytime temps, cool nights -that yellow zig-zag line is the ~approx. mean location of the mid-level ridge (500mb). Plotted: 850mb temps (~5Kft up) -warm colours=warmth, blue=cold, black line=0C (850mb) #onwx #onstorm Loop now till Oct. 3-Fri.

🌡️🌡️850mb TEMPERATURE UPDATE: This evenings OAK balloon launch measured 22.8C at 850mb, setting the all time March record. For perspective, the next daily max that high in the SPC sounding climatology (1948-current) isn't until mid-May... https://x.com/NWSBayArea/status/2034852010143465528

I also brought back maps showing ensemble probability of geopotential height below or above various percentile ranks (left: 500mb height below 10th percentile).

New on this version of PolarWx is 850mb temperature percentile rank probabilities (right: 850mb temp below 0.5th percentile).

Nerd alert: that is some serious cooling at Fairbanks between the 12Z Tuesday and 00Z Wednesday RAOBs. Cooled ~14C at 925 mb & 850mb #akwx #weather @climatologist49.bsky.social

Looking ahead, it continues to appear that Aug will be much warmer overall in most of CA than Jun or Jul (& anomalously warm overall). That said, there has been tendency for modeling to underestimate magnitude of offshore troughing/cool coastal influence so far this season. #CAwx

Consuming just zstd compressed posts from Jetstream downloads only ~850MB/day or 25.5GB/mo

The full firehose requires downloading~95GB/day or ~2.85TB/mo

It's probably incredibly worthwhile to migrate any bots and such you have to Jetstream if you're brave enough. Should have a prod instance soon.
jaz.sh Jaz @jaz.sh · Sep 22
Okay cool so with some tweaks I've got the per message weights:
482B -> 211B

Using a custom zstd dictionary trained on 100k events

Also got the throughput back up so the compressed vs decompressed clients don't have any difference in load on the server

Requires 2x the storage tho on the server
jaz.sh Jaz @jaz.sh · Sep 22
Some preliminary testing with this shows BW savings of ~31.5% using zstd for Jetstream but it also increases the CPU requirements per consumer by an insane amount...

Per-message weight:
- without compression: ~485B
- with compression: ~332B

Max throughput drops by 85.7% though...

But how *unusual* is this cold? This loop shows the 850mb temperature percentile rank vs. a 3-week centered climatology.

Deep blue colors show where this airmass is near record cold for this time of year - which is basically a huge swath of the US:

So this 850MB HDD transfers at 1.3MB/s and takes 10 minutes to backup🤡
November 13, 2025 at 4:31 PM
Reloading...and Reloading & Reloading the cold. Temps at 850mb °F (or ~5Kft.) + Mid level HGTS and flow.
BTW the hole in the data, is not the Ozone hole, or the Polar Vortex, or a Vacuum hole. its so cold, my temp scale couldn't cut it-only goes to -30°F at 850mb, Darn! #onwx #onstorm

Really @microsoft.com ?

850MB for a godamn photo viewer that is slower and has a worse UX than the one shipped with Windows XP ?!

The westerly wind burst earlier in the month was pretty strong and is worth a further dive into the data/better analysis. Quick glance at Reanalysis daily data in Nov, for the equatorial 850mb zonal wind anomaly at 120°W since 1950, shows it was the strongest since the 1997 and 1998 November events.

What is the different in size between using low poly assets vs lots of vertices assets?

Level 1 (the house, if you doubt, the one with the piano): 850Mb
Level 3 (the castle): 5.4Mb

Punch line: the definition depends on the distance to the camera

Recall Rule #1 - Weather Models with "LOW"s or blue colors do NOT make Winter storms; the 850mb/ 700mb/ 500mb/ 200mb DO. So lets look part 2
