I lived near the World Trade Center with my spouse and newborn baby. We breathed that acrid air for months as we were told again and again that it was safe. We relied on those lies. #911survivor

Last 9/11 victim to be rescued alive's chilling story 25 years later
Genelle Guzman-McMillan’s incredible 9/11 survival story is one of the most powerful stories of faith, resilience, and Black Girl Magic. Twenty-five years after she became the last person rescued alive from the World Trade Center rubble, her extraordinary story has now been brought to life in Lifetime’s movie, “Robin Roberts Presents: Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story.” On September 11, 2001, Genelle Guzman was working on the 64th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower when the building collapsed. She was trapped beneath the rubble for 27 hours, seriously injured and unsure whether anyone would ever find her. During those terrifying hours, Genelle prayed for another chance at life. She also says a mysterious man named Paul appeared beside her, held her hand, and encouraged her while she waited for rescuers. Despite her efforts to find him afterward, his identity was never confirmed. Genelle came to believe that Paul may have been an angel sent to help her survive. Now, 25 years after 9/11, her remarkable story is the subject of the Lifetime movie “Angel in the Rubble,” starring Sherri Shepherd as Genelle Guzman and Dondré T. Whitfield as her husband, Roger McMillan. The film is presented and produced by Robin Roberts and directed by Manu Boyer. It premiered on Lifetime on September 12, 2026. In this video, we take a closer look at Genelle Guzman-McMillan’s chilling survival story, her 27 hours trapped beneath the World Trade Center, the mysterious “angel” named Paul, her journey of faith after 9/11, and how her experience inspired the memoir “Angel in the Rubble: The Miraculous Rescue of 9/11’s Last Survivor.” This is more than a story about surviving 9/11. It is a story about faith, courage, hope, Black women, resilience, and finding purpose after unimaginable trauma. My remarks delivered on September 11, 2002, at a community ecumenical memorial service at St. Isidore Parish in Vineland, New Jersey. Having survived the 9/11 attacks, I am reminded once again how fortunate I am to be alive.
