We are 800 strong at the Capitol today in support of #AB1157! As @caspeakerrivas.bsky.social said, "Affordable housing is the civil rights struggle of our time."

That starts with stabilizing rent!

CA’s housing crisis is pushing renters out. Right now, landlords can hike rents up to 10% a year. #AB1157 will lower CA's allowable annual rent increases to 5% & expand renter protections permanently!

Manufactured opposition can’t silence real renter power. Landlords paid fake protesters to oppose rent control before, & now they’re spreading lies to stop #AB1157! Don’t be fooled. AB 1157 is a win for renters. sfstandard.com/2025/04/16/l...
Revealed: Landlord group hired paid protesters to oppose rent control
Hiring fake “activists” is becoming a standard tactic for lobbying groups seeking to influence legislators.

At this past Thursday's meeting, the Berkeley Rent Board reviewed state legislation and identified our top priorities for tenant protection, including support AB1157, AB1248, SB436, AB879, AB246.

We also took an oppose position on AB1183, which weakens protections.
Last night the #Berkeley Rent Board also took positions and identified our top priorities on California state legislation.

Our top priorities are 5 bills that will help us protect tenants, and one bill that we're opposing, as it would make enforcing habitability standards harder.

This is horrifying. Monolingual Cantonese-speaking working-class elders being misled & used by the CA Apartment Association @caanet as tokens to fight against a bill #AB1157 that would lower rent increases- the very renter protections many of these elders desperately need.

Thank you, @asmlizortega.bsky.social ! As your constituent and a renter, I support AB1157.

Strong communities start with housing security. @buffywicks.bsky.social, vote YES on #AB1157! Lowering allowable rent hikes to 5% will be a lifeline for millions of people and keep California renters housed.

Rent increases kill. Research studies have found that $100 increase in median rent = a 9% rise in homelessness, and increase in rent burden = 8% higher risk of death.

We urge CA legislators to vote YES on #AB1157 to cap extreme rent increases and prevent health harms! Renters want to stay housed.

CA! #AffordableRentAct is in the Asm. Judiciary Committee TODAY. #AB1157 fights back against crushing rent hikes. Call committee members NOW! Tell them to vote YES on AB1157!

Current law allows cumulative rent hikes of 90-100% over 10yrs, pushing families into homelessness. The Affordable Rent Act #AB1157 lowers CA's rent cap from 10% to 5% - bringing relief to millions of Californians. Urge legislators to vote YES on #AB1157!

Lower the Rent - ACCE Action
Californians are demanding affordability! That starts with rent. Under current law, renters can face crushing cumulative increases of 90-100% over ten years - pushing families to the financial edge, and forcing many into homelessness. The Affordable Rent Act (AB 1157) will permanently lower the state's rent cap from up to 10% to a maximum of 5%. It will also extend protections for families that live in single-family rentals - many of which are owned by corporate landlords. AB 1157 is being heard in the Assembly Housing Committee on April 24th and the Assembly Judiciary Committee on April 29th. Urge key legislators in both committees to vote YES on AB 1157!

Families across CA are struggling with skyrocketing rent. Half of all renters are rent-burdened & homelessness is rising. The solution? Lower the rent cap.

Today, we launch #AB1157 which would do exactly this. Join us: bit.ly/affordablerentact

Today we launch the #AffordableRentAct campaign w/ @Ash_Kalra! Rent hikes are fueling homelessness: just a $100 increase = 9% rise in homelessness.

#AB1157 will lower the rent cap & keep millions housed. Let’s build momentum and win this fight. www.acceaction.org/l...

Lowering rent caps- statewide and at the local level- is the fastest, most cost-effective way to stabilize housing while CA works to build what we need long-term. Passing #AB1157- the #AffordableRentAct - at the state level, and capping rent increases to 3% in Los Angeles

We are in a state of emergency- while our families are being kidnapped & abducted, the LEAST our legislators can do is to protect us in our housing. @gavinnewsom.bsky.social solidify your legacy by ensuring that #AB1157 the #AffordableRentAct gets passed, making the rent cap permanent

🔥 MUST READ: ACCE member Jesus shares her powerful story in Capitol Weekly!

After decades as a care worker, she was forced into homelessness—not from work ethic, but because CA’s housing system failed her.

California must strengthen tenant protections - Capitol Weekly
OPINION - Despite what many think, California spends a mere 1% of its total budget on housing and homelessness. Until we take bold action by dramatically increasing public investment and strengthening tenant protections, this crisis will only worsen.
