#ABCC11
Everybody's body is different. There is in fact a gene that doesn't produce as much body odor found in most east asians.

If you have the dry flaky earwax, then you probably have the low body odor gene.

There's a lot of complicated and conditional genetic, physiological, and environmental stuff that determines how long you can get away before it becomes intolerable. But there's always a limit.

A really funny one is ABCC11. Genetic differences can affect how quickly you accumulate odor from sweat

It's controlled by the ABCC11 Gene. If that is inactive for any reason you have rock hard ear wax and can't produce body odor from sweat.

It's a genetic variation

i don't think i've ever gone on a date wearing deodorant, but also i have korean abcc11 supremacy

i mean, i do shower, wash my hair, style it, and doll myself up, but i don't think i've ever regularly used deodorant
It’s comforting in a way to know that women who date men and women who date women can both experience the same thing: spending two hours getting dolled up for a date and then arriving to discover your date didn’t even wear deodorant

the ABCC11 gene. when will trump attack it?
August 14, 2026 at 6:22 PM
Well there's also the real thing where some people (Mostly Asians) have a mutation where they lack the ABCC11 gene, so they almost have no body odor at all.

Look up ABCC11, you probably have said gene.

Weird how my boyfriend carries the ABCC11 gene meaning his sweat doesn't smell at all. I have never met anyone like that before and it's so weird like what do you mean you don't wear deodorant and are fine? It's great because "yes my man doesn't stink:D" but also sad like: no my man doesn't stink:((

Research at the University of Bristol found that only 0.006% of the Korean population has the ABCC11 gene, which causes armpit odor.

In fact, the study found that most East Asians don’t have this gene, but Koreans have the lowest numbers.

The advantage of being East Asian is that approx 80 -95% of us have the ABCC11 gene, which means that, sure, we sweat, but we have little to none of that typical body odour smell!
On the show today: Caitriona Ryan on sweating; The fastest spider; Scary public service ads; Laura McAtackney on the Bayeux Tapestry; Oliver Hanlon on Irish in the French resistance; The Liberties bartender race; Kevin Byrne on skywriting ‘I’m Bored’; Ian Robertson on penalty shoot-outs

I am SO jealous of people with homozygous recessive 538G>A alleles for their ABCC11 gene

it still surprises me how many ppl don’t know this: a lot of asians (especially east asians) barely sweat or smell much because of a genetic difference (abcc11), compared to other populations.

that’s also why you will see vietnamese people wearing a full hoodie in 40° and looking totally fine.

Around 80-90% of Japanese people have little to no body odor. This is caused by a specific mutation in the ABCC11 gene. Imagine using one of those machines with us, hairy beasts, that stink after 30 mins working in the sun and spend £££ on antiperspirants.

People stink. It’s 95 degrees on the northeast coast and everyone has extra abcc11 working today!!

As you might know, most of us East Asians tend to have less body odor due to a variation in the ABCC11 gene.
Of course, it depends on the person—but if you’d like to really taste a Japanese guy’s scent, you might have to ask him to skip showers for three days or more.
Enjoy the smell… and the rest.

I still carry a bit of envy of my late father. You see he had an enviable genetic mutation that many East Asians also have. He had 2 inactive copies of the ABCC11 gene. His sweat did not stink.

www.bbc.com/future/artic... vast majority of people of European or African descent have wet earwax, which is yellow/orange in colour and sticky. However, 95% of East Asian people have dry earwax, which is grey/non-sticky. The gene responsible for producing either wet or dry earwax is called ABCC11
What your earwax can reveal about your health
Earwax can contain valuable indicators to a person's health. Now scientists are analysing its chemistry in the hope of finding new ways of diagnosing diseases.
