How should benefits from Marine Genetic Resources (MGRs) and their Digital Sequence Information (DSI) be shared?

With 2/3 of the Ocean lying in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ), this is a key question for the future governance of marine biodiversity.

(1/3) 🧭 What’s in an EBSA?
The paper groups EBSAs into four types based on size and spatial stability:
🔹 Small & static
🔹 Large & static
🔹 Ephemeral
🔹 Dynamic
It classifies each by jurisdiction (national, transboundary, ABNJ)- helping clarify kind of monitoring or management may be possible.

The #BBNJ Agreement could help fix long-standing weaknesses in high seas fisheries management.

By coordinating fragmented efforts and filling governance gaps, authors argue it may strengthen regional fisheries bodies without undermining their mandates.
The BBNJ agreement and its potential to facilitate fisheries management in the ABNJ
Over decades, the management of the high sea fisheries have been frustrated by a series of enduring issues such as the “free-rider” and non-compliance…

Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) cover nearly half of our planet and yet most of them remain unmapped.

For example, the southern Indian Ocean is home to vast ABNJ regions - but without accurate seabed data, it's challenging to monitor ecosystems or make informed #conservation decisions.

2 And these interactions present both challenges and opportunities for RFMOs to contribute to and benefit from the evolving framework of ocean governance. RFMOs are intergovernmental organisations established to manage fish stocks and promote sustainable fishing practices within specific ABNJ areas

Here is a continuation of my musings on creating "ocean stewardship" zones —High Seas pockets within the FFA membership—governed by Pacific Island states and their people. These MPAs could be based on traditional marine tenure systems.

My work in this paper focused on the “how” framed by existing technologies; the “who” remains a construct based on UNCLOS and international agreements. Yet the essential “why” is still, to an extent, controversial and speculative. So let's test them.

I think there is merit in presenting my findings, as while we discuss MPAs in ABNJ as a totally novel concept, they are not… What is novel is the framework in which they will exist under the BBNJ Agreement.

And more FAD settings by a Korean carrier in ABNJ on behalf’s Korean owned Purse Seiners. Setting FADs is defined as fishing by the WCPFC,carriers are not licensed to fish. Yet the Korean interpretation somehow yields a different understanding, and flag state is (i)responsible for its vessels.
