...Today's shock discovery in Meiringen: The hotel routinely identified with the "Englischer Hof" in ACDoyle... has an Irish bar in the basement. 😄

Today's #SherlockHolmes -adjacent business on "A Trip to the Reichenbach Falls": What you need to know about Meiringen. CAUTION: contains rail routings, museums, ACDoyle analysis, and sentiment. www.tumblr.com/dduane/79585... #GNUPeterMorwood

I've also started reading (listening to audiobook) A Study in Scarlet, the first Sherlock Holmes book by ACDoyle. I was inspired by my recent fascination with the 2012-17 TV series Elementary, started wondering why so many reinterpretations of this character keep appearing.

A little side-reading from Pushcart...
La Bella Lingua: My Love Affair with Italian, the World's Most Enchanting Language by Dianne Hales, found via a Pushcart poem ref'ing the book, emphasizing how Dante's Comedia was the common thread of Italians from all strata of society.

9. I take a lot from 18th century novels, so it's more vibes than characters:
Maurice by E.M. Forster
Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Hercule Poirot novels by Agatha Christie
Jules Verne sci-fi novels
Sherlock Holmes by Sir ACDoyle

Agree-Deborah Blum's excellent Ghost Hunters also shows how late 19C-early20C interest in spiritualism was tied to advances in technology-radio waves, electricity. ACDoyle v interested from science POV. Combine with later postWW1 trauma & there it is. Technology most don't fully understand+loss etc
