A good thread, on top of a good thread. As a commissioning editor, I also want to throw in another aspect - the commissioning editor may adore your novel and may fight for it in acqs but not get it through - because unless it's a tiny publisher, the company is doing acqs via committee.
A good thread. The sad fact is, most publishers are already working beyond capacity, and there is no shortage of books out there. Even of excellent books.
For querying writers & #writingcommunity I see people across socials who are upset that they cannot find an agent/indie publisher despite having glowing professional feedback on their novel - such as a manuscript review or assessment. They don't understand how this can be and feel something's amiss

And this is why sometimes you'll get rejections that say a submission runs too close in themes to something already being published, because there are only so many slots in a publishing year and only so many times you can bring acqs that follow similar lines.

I tend to think of the contract as something that “happens” in acqs (tho admittedly my perspective is limited by only working in-house in mktg, and only for a brief time). maybe list the guide under acqs but include a cross-ref in the copyright/sub rights section?

MPOW has ~280k printed items, & I think we’re now at ~60% in the online catalog (it was around 40% ~2 years ago). New acqs get more time for records, but backlog has different goals & standards.

Agreed. After 35 years working in industrial engineering, capex planning, head of international strategy for a Fortune 50 company, & 13 years turning around fraudulent acquisitions by multinationals in the PRC. It is easy to say that many acqs destroy value. A status report would add value.
