reading about the unconventional/guerilla warfare in the ACW is terrifying
The American Civil War contained "conventional" civil wars within it, particularly here in the Southern Highlands and in the Trans-Mississippi; little bands of deserters, criminals, edlerly homeguards, scattered detachments of regular troops, and straight up psychopaths, more murders than battles
i've said before that the US Civil War being primarily formal armies fighting each other in setpiece battles really clouds a lot of americans understanding of what an actual civil war looks like

A British journalist visited the South before the ACW and wrote something along the lines of "these guys aren't aristocratic, they're psychotic."
Fanny Kemble, and very importantly she wasn't Southern, she was a British actress who had married a guy who had inherited a plantation, who she divorced after spending a couple of years on that plantation where she was horrified by slavery.

i don't think contemporary american civil conflict would look like the first ACW, i think it looks more like the Troubles
I don't think America is on the verge of civil war but virtually everyone who has lived through a civil war since the late 20th century recalls scenes like these
