#ADTs
This week's quote: #Arizona State University is "a univ. that sees its charter as serving the world" (Jeff DeFranco special advisor to ASU provost, concerning ASU's new articulation agreements w. @calcommcolleges.bsky.social Assoc. Degrees for Transfer[ADTs]). buff.ly/ghQaNei #highered #AcademicSky
Arizona State offers guaranteed admission to California community college grads
Students will be able to earn their bachelor’s degrees online, at ASU’s California locations or in Arizona for the whole campus experience.

I'll be in London (Wednesday 2026-11-11 18:30) talking about the history of data abstraction:

ADTs and CLU

We'll take a trip back to the mid-1970s to explore work led by Liskov in "Programming with Abstract Data Types" and "Abstraction Mechanism in CLU"

Well, this should be fun if you're around London middle of next month: Papers We Love are back with a surprise @kevlin. No, not that kind of @kevlin.

however, on the other side of the hill you get a language that is that exacting, while ALSO being flexible. first-class functions, (G)ADTs, type classes, type families, optics (with added language support), monads for typed effects, ...
October 22, 2026 at 11:24 PM
learning curve is definitely extremely steep, as doing anything nontrivial requires a decent understanding of both ADTs AND monads, neither of which are exactly "easy" concepts. printf-debugging is possible but requires unsafeCoerce 😉

New Mexico Orthopaedics is now sharing ADTs & CCDs with SYNCRONYS! Admission, Discharge, Transfer (ADT) messages follow a patient within a healthcare facility in real-time, ensuring their data stays current. New Mexico Orthopaedics has been serving patients in the Albuquerque-Metro area since 1983.

Maybe, for AI agents, Haskell code with well-defined ADTs, pure functions, and comments is actually more useful than documentation written in Markdown and Mermaid.

look,,,
coffeescript, elm, typescript, github.com/dry-rb/dry-m...
all had fun stealing monads and adts from Haskell like half a decade before cpp got it's shity joke of a Maybe in std::optional

product types/actual ADTs are similarly superfluous, as much as it pains my little hindley-milner heart

1. Problem Statement: In this project, you will gain more experience with Abstract Data Types (ADTs) by implementing a Matrix class in C++. You will be provided with a file (Matrix.h) that contains the complete interface specification for that class, as well as a test suite (main.cpp) that tests each Matrix operation in isolation. Your job will be to provide implementations of each of the public interface methods in…

ADTs are not an academic FP gimmick - every language and programmer should use them! ☝️

Why they matter even more in the AI era? Context windows.

When invalid states are unrepresentable, you delete defensive branching. Your coding agent stops burning tokens on impossible paths - and stops forgetting critical logic buried in nested 'if' checks. 💡

Same. Though, I don't think it's us being jaded. I think it's that most languages these days try to be the same and have all the same design features (e.g., Java, the king of OOP, got lambdas and streams; JavaScript got class syntax, etc). Now it's ADTs and checked-exceptions-2.0 in everything.

Well, we got typeclasses and ADTs in the mainstream through rust, immutability by default is also a thing
