Video: io_uring, eBPF, XDP and AF_XDP

Nice introduction and explanation what makes networking fast or slow within the Linux kernel (like passing through many components) and how io_uring and eBPF solve certain problems.

Virtual machines aren’t going away but they shouldn’t require a separate network stack.

Cilium is starting to change that. By combining AF_XDP with netkit, it collapses the network path for VMs. It’s a promising glimpse at a more unified, efficient future

At the eBPF workshop, Panayiotis Gavriil introduced uXDP, a new XDP runtime that allows you to run unmodified XDP programs on top of DPDK or AF_XDP. uXDP was able to improve the performance of an unmodified Katran by 40%!

AF_XDP copy mode has received less attention than its zero-copy mode. At Netdev 0x1A, Jason Xing showed how he almost doubled the performance of AF_XDP copy mode after methodically profiling it!

With AF_XDP I can push 100M packets/sec from one Linux box. That’s enough to probe basically the entire public IPv4 Internet in under a minute 🤯
That’s kind of insane.
I think I know what I want to build next... 🤓

Been geeking out on packet processing in Go lately.
Result: go-afxdp, a Go library for AF_XDP. Send and receive at ~14M packets/sec (10G line rate) in just a few lines of Go. No DPDK, no C, and you don't lose your NIC. Blog toonk.io/line-rate-pa...

Fun read: testing AF_XDP on Google Cloud C4N
great to a see wireblast mention! 🤓

Google's C4N offers up to 400 Gbps of network bandwidth and 95 million packets per second (MPPS)
One core, nearly 6 Mpps.

Last weekend I posted about doing 148M packets/sec from Go with DPDK

The thing I was really working toward is now out: packetio.

One Go API for DPDK, AF_XDP, mlx5 Direct Verbs, and AF_PACKET. Swap the backend, while keeping the packet processing code🤓

Short demo my af_xdp based internet scanner 🤓 Running for 24hrs, by coincidence picked up the Hawaii Internet outage! Can find quickly what regions were affected and what ISP's were the main impacted ones. Pretty cool!

I had to send so much data I spent 6 months getting AF_XDP to work and fixing driver bugs in intel 10G NICS :)

Have worked on it for more than 1.5 years at this point. Yes, it needs AF_XDP to actually work and push the BW required :)

In 2019, Ostinato tested an Intel XL710 40G NIC using DPDK. Today, Ostinato Turbo handles 10/25/40/100G line-rate using AF_XDP - no DPDK needed.
