Finally, the idea that AGI will be given an understanding is at odds with the AGI hype narratives. All of them, almost to a one, hinge on the assumption that AGI can develop its own understanding well in advance of human activity. If we accept this, then Comrade AGI is one possibility.

OpenAI and Anthropic have been *no better prepared* than Google for all the ways that this shit is going wrong.

They talk a big ethics+regulation game, then do whatever they can to stay ahead in the race to AGI.

Believing in AGI matters for fundraising. It hasn’t mattered for preventing harms.

It was about the problem itself: the tantalizing quest to train computers to think, the sheer improbability that a pile of processors and a mess of linear algebra could combine to produce a new form of intelligence. They wanted to build AGI because of what it might unlock: lifesaving medical treatments, economic hyper-growth, a world of inconceivable abundance. If they were right, the people who created AGI would be celebrated as scientific heroes, the twenty-first-century heirs of Edison, Newton, and Einstein. the second type were the seekers. These were the true futurists-the people, like Sam Altman, who thought AGI would be a turning point in the history of life itself. These people had read Ray Kurzweil's books about the singularity and Nick Bostrom's work on superintelligence, and absorbed a century's worth of science fiction. They believed that human intelligence was a point on an evolutionary curve that started billions of years ago with ancient prokaryotes and would continue with godlike digital minds exploring the cosmos. Some of them thought humans would eventually merge with Al, uploading our minds into computers or installing sidericke the wav the chips in our brains.
