She answered the phone on the third ring. It was her voice on the line—whispering “Don’t look outside.” But something was already knocking.

Don’t Look Outside The phone rang three times. Marin snatched it up on reflex. “Hello?” Static hissed. Then—her own voice: “Don’t look outside.” Same cadence. Same nervous tremble. Not a recording. Marin froze. Then turned to the window, unthinking. Curtains glowed orange from the streetlight. Faint shapes shifted. A car? A person? She squeezed her eyes shut. “Don’t look outside,” the voice repeated, pleading. “Who is this?” she asked, voice cracking. The line crackled. Breathing—almost hers, but slightly off. “You have to stay inside,” said her double. “Promise me.” A knock at the window. Three even taps. Another knock, softer. “They can’t come in unless you open the curtains,” the voice warned. Her skin prickled. “If you look…” Static surged. “…it takes your place.” The line went dead. Marin backed away. The glow from outside painted soft shadows. Instinct screamed. Don’t look. A scrape—fingernails at the glass. She turned. TV screen caught her reflection: pale, terrified. “Marin,” came her voice—from the window now. “You can look.” It was gentle. Familiar. Manipulative. “You’re tired. Let me help.” A lie in her own voice. The curtain stirred. Shadows rippled. The phone rang again. Three times. She answered. “Don’t listen to it,” the whisper urged. “You can’t trust it.” A knock. “It won’t wait much longer,” said the voice in her ear. “Promise me—don’t open the curtain.” Scratching now. Desperate. Rhythmic. “You don’t need to be scared,” the outside voice coaxed. Marin clutched the phone. The line crackled. Silence. The scratching stopped. The glow outside flickered, then steadied. Her reflection stared back from the dark screen. Then—behind her. “Don’t look outside.” The phone was dead. The sound came from the kitchen. She turned. The window was still covered. But the door—ajar by half an inch—shifted softly in the still air.

The prompt was supposed to be a little scary but you somehow turned that into something worse than silent hill. I loved reading it and I hate the sleep I'm about to lose. As always from you, excellent entry!
