Just a slight sense from Lear that nobody had ever done anything boundary-pushing in US sitcom before AITF, which literally isn’t true.

Speight also can’t quite seem to zone in on Mike’s flaws in the way AITF does. We repeatedly see Mike in AITF being a bad husband and a bad man, as well as a good husband and a good man. In excruciating detail, and often in private.

AITF was so rich that it spawned its own spin offs. Hard to imagine Mike and Rita getting a spin off.

Till Death has the kind of polemical panel show dynamic whereas All in the Family takes it somewhere else. The characterisation is better on AITF.

And yes, does AITF do the cliched thing you might imagine a US adaptation would do? Yes, entirely… but then the results are almost the opposite of what you would expect.

He plays the role intensely, but beautifully non-threateningly, which is a hard thing to pull off. (And it really needed to be done - his first ep is shortly after Edith's attempted rape. To get it wrong would be awful.)

(It’s a good and brave episode, but unlike many AITF eps, it doesn’t *quite* get to the nub of the matter. It needed less hand-wringing from all, and a more direct engagement with the point. But I admire that they tried.)

Love Thy Neighbour spent far too long trying to make Eddie and Bill "equally as bad". Which is a fundamental misunderstanding of racial politics.
AITF knows that Archie is worse than George Jefferson, while allowing George his own faults. Which works so much better.
