Have you read Jonathan Grudin's take on this? Somewhat dated, and not the best historiography but still very insightful ojs.aaai.org/aimagazine/i...

🧪 Doing some lit review this week, came across this delightful 1988 paper I hadn’t seen before on AI evaluation. Really good stuff, with Qs like “Is the task significant? why?” and “who defines the criteria [for effectiveness]?” and “do you understand why it works?” ojs.aaai.org/aimagazine/i...

Interesting to see the “humans are better at:machines are better at” discourse of the 1950s playing out again with AI.

Hint: you need to think of the humans + AI as a “joint cognitive system” not as two agents.

Russell & Norvig's textbook includes bibliographical and historical notes for each chapter, linking each AI idea to its origins. I found those helpful for getting at the actual history of AI, beyond common narratives.

I also love Jonathan Grudin's take on this history: ojs.aaai.org/aimagazine/i...

AI Winters are seen as being in the rearview mirror, deep learning might be capturing general principles of intelligence, but it's useful enough either way to put those concerns aside.
