It was a 1978 Mitsubishi pickup, but at nearly the same time I learned to drive a 1941 Plymouth. My first car was a 1974 Audi Fox with a 4-speed. I have only had 2 cars without a manual transmission in 40 years of driving. Currently have a 2019 VW Alltrack with a 6-speed. Row, row, row your gears.
QOTD: What car did you learn to drive a manual transmission in?
I learned in a friend’s 1987 Chevy Spectrum.

I learned to drive stick on one of these.

Absolutely. I ditched my sport sedan in 2022 for a couple different lifted wagons since when I was still there and driving a decent bit. 1st a used Golf Alltrack and now a used Volvo that I took to Atlanta with me.

Hell. Even as recently as 2019 (in the U.S. at least) we had the E-Golf, Golf 1.8, GTI, R, Sportwagen, and Alltrack. And up until 2015 we had diesel variants to go with them.

this is the only EV I’ve yet seen that seems like it might be worthy of replacing my Alltrack

If I could change one thing about my otherwise nearly ideal car (2018 VW Alltrack), it would be the addition of a tape deck. I want to keep the SD card playback and the CD drive, too, though.

Our 2017 VW AllTrack is officially dead (pitted piston heads; needs a new engine). Suggestions re: gently used EVs that would fit a family of 3 with a dog, bikes (on a hitch rack), and a canoe (on a roof rack)?

His comparison point for modern cars is his 2017 VOLKSWAGEN Alltrack, a car that sold for $35,000 when new. The Mercedes 190E sold for $32,500 in *1989.* Adjusted for inflation, that's a $90,000 car. There is just no comparison between a Golf and a $90,000 Mercedes. It's insane to think there is.

The mechanical complexity of AWD *and* turbo is… not a great combo for ease of maintenance 😓
Other options were an Audi B9 A4, Merc CLA “shooting brake”, Mini Clubman S, Golf Alltrack, and Volvo V60. All of which have their own issues (including the Volvo! Their 2.0 engines have a bad rep)

Spent the last few days cycling around Sparta in Wisconsin with the wife and in-laws. We finished a satisfying 50 mile ride from Bangor to the burnt out bridge outside Trempealeau. Now we’re heading north of Duluth in Minnesota to ride mountain bikes at Goosebury state park! 😅
