I've now finished Zero Mission and AM2R and I think that AM2R might be one of the best games I've ever played

I played an a bit of both AM2R and Samus Returns
AM2R: feels like a refinement of Zero Mission in both style and gameplay. Tricky but good flow
Samus Returns: feels very much like a prototype to Dread. Really reliant on the parry for some reason? Don’t like using 3DS analog for fine tune controls

Question: Metroid 2 is the only 2D Metroid I haven’t played. Which is the preferred way to play it these days: the original, AM2R or Samus Returns? I have access to all of them so availability isn’t a concern so much as better first experience

For ages, the final community goal for updating the excellent fangame AM2R was to replace every borrowed and kitbashed sprite in the game with new bespoke assets.
