The American Ornithological Society meeting includes an annual quiz bowl (think bird-themed bar trivia)

Student teams compete for serious prizes and non-student teams compete for bragging rights

I never managed to win the student competition but my team did just win the bragging rights, so #AOS26

I've spent most of my life in the US Corn Belt-- I'm obsessed with spring warbler migration, I know tiny seemingly worthless forest patches matter

anyway, literally tearing up during @fyguo.bsky.social's #AOS26 plenary-- her work shows this on a broad scale and will get protection for these patches

My colleague Daniel Baron has been felting this cute Saw-whet Owl throughout #AOS26

it's getting close enough to complete now (and I'm tired enough at the end of this conference) that I keep jumping when I see it out of the corner of my eye

In the most non-binary moment of my life, I listened to the audience spontaneously clap for Dr. Patty Rodriguez Brennan's data-driven plea to study sex variation in animals as a bimodal spectrum (versus a strict categorical binary) and I burst into tears that smeared my nametag pronouns

Just learned (via Joshua Driscoll's talk at #AOS26) that a historical source noted that at one point Eastern Whip-poor-wills were "as common as robins" in Iowa 😭

They've faced something like a 70% decline from 1970-2014, plus declines before that. There are something like 222x more robins now
