Important update: H5N1 variant D1.1 identified in milk and dairy cattle in Nevada. This is not the same as the variant that has been circulating in cattle until now, it is the one responsible for the death in Louisiana and a severely sick teenager in canada.

USDA announced today that they found H5N1 genotype D1.1 in milk in Nevada today. Billing it as a success of bulk tank testing, they’re listing four herds with a date of 31 January - but here are my questions: why did it only get *announced* today? And what will this mean for containment? 🧪
