Neill does, however, think that quantum computers will be useful for physical prediction. There's lots of experiments connected to theoretical nuclear physics that he'd like to do that are basically impossible at the moment, but a utility-scale quantum computer could simulate them. #APSSummit26

Smith's answer is, realistically, 2040s. Many private fusion companies say they’ll deliver at the start of the 2030s, but the problems ITER is being built to solve exist for the private sector, too. “There’s just not a natural abundance of tritium...these are challenges for everyone.” #APSSummit26

Governments routinely spend $10^7-10^8 to obtain information on quantum mechanical problems. Examples include the Frontier supercomputer at Oak Ridge. So if you can build a computer that can do things those machines can do, at that price point, governments will be interested. #APSSummit26
