The great May aurora was the result of Sunspot group AR3664 which was was about 15 times wider than Earth, covering roughly 124,300 miles (200,000 KMs) producing several X-class flares, including the largest solar flare ever recorded and several clouds of solar plasma. #Bestof2024 #astronomy

I received the BAA Solar Section newsletter yesterday. Remember AR3664? Apparently it’s ranked as the 12th largest #sunspot group since the start of the Greenwich Sunspot Catalogue 150 years ago in 1874. #sun #astronomy

First time I've seen the sun long enough to photograph it in almost ten days. Still quite interesting, though not as jaw-dropping as when AR3664 was making auroras everywhere. #Astronomy #Astrophotography

Status report, New Toy Dep't: Just downloaded the SpaceWeatherLive app for the iPad... and was immediately much amused by the news that half an hour ago the Sun's bad-boy active sunspot region AR3664 had popped another solar flare of class M6.66. (laughing) Good Omens jokes now?

I got a break in the clouds yesterday (9 May) lunchtime so took a look at the Sun. The large sunspot group AR3664 is very impressive! I could even make it out naked eye using eclipse glasses. Will it give us an aurora show this weekend? We shall see 🤞 #Astronomy #Astrophotography

Seeing as we're having a powerful solar storm this weekend, I thought I'd share some of my photos from last year's X-Class flare. First time I'd ever seen the lights as more than a dim green glow.

The Sun. Taken 12 May 2024 with a 4 inch refractor and a Canon 700D. This is the first time I’ve taken a close-up of a sunspot group; in this case, AR3664. Some thin cloud made focussing tricky but I’m chuffed with the result. Processed using Gimp. #astronomy #astrophotography

An interesting and complex active region rotating into view, AR3691. In a handful of days we may well see AR3664 (the aurora maker) again, if indeed it lived long enough to complete the journey. Whether or not it will be weakened or strengthened remains to be seen. #Astronomy #Astrophotography
