If you want an example, I now face a 6 figure tariff to import a new ARPES system I already ordered from Germany if Trump doesn't cancel the tariffs. That freezes all other spending as I build my lab, including on American-made products I need. Also jeopardizes my ability to pay my grad students. ⚛️🧪
I pitched my NYT editor that folks really need to understand that the deadweight loss of tariffs rises in the square of the tariff rate. Despite the wonkiness of it all, they said yes--as long as you can explain that intuitively.

Lemme know how I did:

If you're curious how this has affected science, I devoted about 9 months to learning about tariff law so that I could avoid a $150k fee when I import an XPS/ARPES system next month, but still haven't gotten a waiver. Now we'll try to speed up delivery to avoid the next bomb that Trump throws.

Physics Nobel will be announced tomorrow morning, so I guess this would be the spot for a half-assed prediction. Looking at the recent list, feels like we're due for something in the cond-mat area, maybe some experimental technique? Not sure what, though. ARPES, or is that too old?

Do CS papers have an Author Contribution section? Physics does this. Not sure how much it actually matters, but maybe it’s a step in the right direction for credit attribution for a medium number of authors

🔍 LiV₂O₄ shows heavy fermion behaviour without f-electrons as ARPES and DMFT reveal Hund’s coupling and frustration drive extreme mass renormalisation.

Engineering a Spin‐Orbit Bandgap in Graphene‐Tellurium Heterostructures
Tellurium intercalation in epitaxial graphene on Ir(111) enables the emergence of a spin–orbit-induced bandgap with energy spin splitting. By combining STM, ARPES, spin-resolved ARPES, and DFT, two s...

Discuss, please :)

If you follow condensed-matter physics, you may have noticed the theoretical idea of the quantum geometric tensor of a crystalline material has been discussed a lot recently.

Now, Riccardo Comin's group have shown how to measure it using a fancy ARPES technique.

Measurements of the quantum geometric tensor in solids
Nature Physics - Experiments that directly probe the quantum geometric tensor in solids have not been reported. Now, the quantum metric and spin Berry curvature—dual components of the quantum...

We were pleased to host Tom van Waas (Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium) for his lecture on extracting self-energy and the Eliashberg function from ARPES. He presented a Bayesian approach and the xARPES package, with examples from SrTiO₃ and MoTe₂. Thank you, Tom!

Continuing on the topic of defects, we recently found that even TINY amounts of disorder, leading to grain boundaries, in C60 films dramatically changes the lifetimes of excitons! Films that may seem good by LEED and ARPES may not be so great as reported by PhD student Rysa Greenwood in JPCL….

Proud moment for NTC🥳!
Aki Pulkkinen won the Best Poster Prize at a conference in Budapest — and received the award from Olle Eriksson, chair of this year’s Nobel Prize Committee.
His work advances understanding of time-dependent ARPES in SnTe. Congrats, Aki👏!
