Every gas leaves a distinct fingerprint in light. At Augsburg’s MINT Summer School, glass ampoules were turned into plasmas using an electromagnetic field. The third from the left glows like the hydrogen and deuterium plasmas in W7-X and ASDEX Upgrade. #physics

We opened the vacuum vessel of ASDEX Upgrade and found a white crystal layer. It forms through chemical reactions between water and boron, introduced during the regular boronisation process. We sprayed distilled water and wiped it off with a cloth. The layer appears after each experiment campaign.

Given that I'm based in Germany and worked at EUROfusion until very recently I reject the Brexity accusation.
There aren't many new machines, bar a few reconditioned STs and JT60-SA. WEST and EAST don't do power plant scenarios. ASDEX-U is a workhorse but is also old.

Our founders worked at MIT's Alcator C-Mod. We have senior staff who worked on JET and ASDEX Upgrade. Our head of plasma physics was at DIII-D. We have a deep program of collaboration with researchers around the world. We benefit very directly from accumulated tokamak expertise.
