#ASECS18 #SexualHarassment forum: A point that comes up repeatedly: other societies have policies, many members here have training/experience: we have a lot of collective knowledge to make this work.

#ASECS18 #SexualHarassment forum: we need to find a safe & effective mechanism. Should new board members (& others) receive training on handling harassment, bullying, etc.

#ASECS18 #SexualHarassment forum: question raised about institutional memory: if someone tells an executive board member, the records are still kept.

#ASECS18 #SexualHarassment forum: observers can report, too. The burden shouldn't all be on the person being harassed.

#ASECS18 #SexualHarassment forum: my 2 cents on those few feeling constricted at professional conferences when drinking: do you also harass people in your non-professional life? When I go for very non-work reasons to AwesomeCon, there's a policy http://awesome-con.com/policies/

#ASECS18 #SexualHarassment forum: earlier question, when does the conference end? Many of us (including me): cash bars, after hours conference gatherings, etc count. Just because there is alcohol & sociability doesn't mean you are no longer in a professional setting.

#ASECS18 #SexualHarassment forum: will disclosure (vs report) help track repeat offenders? At our universities, we are mandatory reporters. What will we put in places at ASECS?
November 24, 2024 at 8:11 AM
#ASECS18 #SexualHarassment forum: Unlike most of our universities, this policy will not include mandatory reporting. People raising the issue that the burden should not be on the survivor: how do we not put all the onus on the one reporting?

#ASECS18 #sexualHarassment forum: questions about how one reports, the scope of TitleIX, as well as digital issues (e.g., taking photos or tweeting without permission). What guidelines do we need for panel chairs as well as an academic society as a whole?

#sasecs #asecs18 "Daring Not To Know: #ConsumingOtherness & Making the Familiar in Asian-European Exchanges" 1) Bernadette Andrea complicates Montagu's Turkish Letters by looking at the women who enabled & accompanied her while travelling in the Ottoman Empire 1/

#sasecs #asecs18 #ConsumingOtherness Andrea reminds us that Montagu spent much of her time in non-Muslim areas of Constantinople. Quaker women had already written about their travels prior to the #TurkishLetters

I 💖 Sue Lanser: she connect rising US sympathy to the late Marie Antoinette to an investment in whiteness, linking it to the Eurocentrism of Oroonoko + visual depictions of the executed queen (images cover #c18 to recent films, plays) + #ASECS18 1/
