#AWIAL
Thankfully caught AWIAL earlier this year on a screener.

This is for Wicked 😁

Wowee.

The auds for Ekō 📽️ (Desi shtetl) and AWIAL 📽️ (inside the city, indie theater) were restrained & polite. There was only one other person at Goat Life 📽️, so that doesn’t count.

The rowdiest auds I’ve seen here were at Baby (🙄) and Baahubali: The Epic First Night First Show, because of course.

I’ve only seen two! Be gentle! 😅

I absolutely loved AWIAL 📽️. The Goat Life 📽️ was definitely a movie experience, tho one I doubt I’ll see again. #DesiWatch

This reminds me that I need to update my spreadsheet for ’25. I’ve been tracking the Indian cinema I’ve seen & the lengths in minutes. Cinema!

AWIAL 📽️ is on par with any other major work of world cinema and was made by a woman, which is rare anywhere. It’ll be in the Criterion Collection next month, ensuring its place in the canon. Powerful people in Bollywood don’t want you to see this movie. So see it. Shades of Wong Kar Wai. #DesiWatch

I won’t lie. I’m strongly considering obtaining Criterion’s Apu Trilogy box set some day (when I have disposable income again) & I’m very pleased that they’ve already acquired AWIAL for the NA market.

But: Salty I can’t afford The World of Wong Kar-Wai (AND! Ashes of Time 📽️ is missing) #DesiWatch

The only disruptive thing I’ve personally noticed south of the border is that AWIAL was treated as as specialty/indie release. I had to drive TWO hours to an independent exhibitor to see it. None of the otherwise-Desi-film-friendly theaters showed it. (And perhaps not Laaptaa Ladies either!!)

“Looking ahead, Kapadia revealed plans for two additional features set in Mumbai, potentially forming a trilogy. ‘I’m thinking about doing two more films in Bombay,’ she said, though noting the concept is still in early stages.” #DesiWatch #AllWeImagineAsLight #AWIAL 📽️

Hmm. Some of the themes of AWIAL are becoming clearer now. Dhanyavad for this!

Dammit. It’s decidedly not Too Much Cinema for me today, but all the AWIAL screenings today were matinées 😓😅

Luckily, it’s playing locally to me through at least X-mas Eve. So not today, but soon for All We Inagine as Light 📽️.

I missed the last showing of Oppenheimer at my local IMAX, an eternal shame I have to bear forever. So I’m not missing the final showing of the Interstellar 📽️ re-release today. Later, IF I feel up to it, AWIAL at a local indie. Will today be Too Much Cinema for @soundkeeper.bsky.social? #DesiWatch

#DesiWatch, I desperately want to see AWIAL, but I fear that it may not come to my area theaters for a while. (Or worse, that the window was in the last three weeks and I couldn’t go see it 😩)

the film board of India submitted laapataa ladies instead 😮‍💨 it was a whole thing a couple mths ago lol. Many people were upset. The film board has continued to be proven wrong too cause LL didn't make it into the shortlist, while AWIAL has been sweeping the awards circuit. It's a damn shame

I tried to do that too but came out blurry 😔

What really stood out for me was the background score. Anyone know what was that delightful track that played during the end credits? #AWIAL #DesiWatch

Oh yea. Got it. I guess AWIAL will be one of the first movies I watch in a theatre who’s main language I don’t speak nor understand.

My experience is, the Best Foreign Film category is chosen differently than the main draw, and tends to be lot more "artistic" standards. I somehow don't see Laapata Ladies doing well at all. AWIAL, on the other hand, seems to fit naturally.

AWIAL? I thought I saw it on Hotstar.

All we imagine as light #AWIAL did not work for me. Very well directed, acted, shot, beautifully captures the claustrophobic Mumbai city..the ending was a copout though....suddenly there was some realisation borne out of fabulism...and it felt rushed. I would rather have preferred an open ending.

Outside India and still got the opportunity to watch AWIAL hassle-free. Honestly, I loved it even more just because of that 😅
January 31, 2025 at 4:02 PM
I would blame the distribution/screening.
AWIAL (and Payal) did an excellent job communicating the release dates and regions.
I was equally excited for Girls will be girls and Santosh. Only to be disappointed
Interesting that SANTOSH hasn't got anywhere near the attention ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT (which I loved) has. A naturalistic north India-set neo-noir where the femme fatale, as it were, is the mentor to a young policewoman, seducing her into the 'empowerment' of state-sanctioned hate & violence.

I’m a pretty casual movie viewer and tend to not notice the finer details of film making but boy did the cinematography of AWIAL talk to me in a way that I haven’t felt before.

It's been one month in the States. I miss home so much. Slowly getting used to doing things alone. Went for a walk in the snow in the morning and then went to watch a movie by myself.

Side note: AWIAL is a gorgeous movie and FFI is the world's biggest fool for not selecting it as an Oscars pick.
December 22, 2024 at 1:27 AM
major spread and still need to see AWIAL!! also i watch most of their online content but am not subbed to the physicals!

AWIAL is so so gorgeous; that final third is just wondrous.
