The "Communist Terror®" that stopped the Nazis? Yeah, that was a good thing. So was lifting millions upon millions from abject poverty.

The abject poverty of traditional horse race presidential coverage in the authoritarian moment:
Donald Trump’s aides believe his State of the Union address will reignite the president’s momentum—but Republicans are worried, @jonlemire.bsky.social reports:
Trump’s Suddenly High-Stakes State of the Union
The president is visiting Congress in a dramatically different place from where he was a year ago.

That elderly would not die starving in abject poverty.

I love the idea that it was between abject poverty and death and making a fun video about how fun the Disney channel movies are, and that I perhaps should have chosen death

man the psychotic replies to this, as everyone decides it’s a chance to rip someone apart for not pretending to live in abject poverty

White men in London today cheering Charlie Kirk and blaming their abject poverty on immigrants, not the cleptos running the country to the ground

Pro cyclist here who grew up in abject poverty as an only child. When I started cycling seriously in my teens I needed extra calories mom couldn't afford. I used to go to the local food bank and pretend I had three siblings. They knew and never said a word. They were true saints.

The word for Aug 17, '25 is ABJECT - extremely bad, degrading, or hopeless, often with a sense of being utterly wretched or humiliating. I use it when a bad state is even worse: abject poverty, abject humiliation, abject terror.

Today is the International Day for Poverty Eradication. I think back on Dad's teachings regarding poverty. In Strength to Love he wrote: “God never intended for one group of people to live in superfluous inordinate wealth, while others live in abject deadening poverty.”

I think it's weird and bad that a bunch of people who are, by any reasonable international or historical standard, preposterously wealthy have convinced themselves that actually they live in abject poverty
Yeah instead of listening to silly things like “GDP” and “unemployment” we should use the deranged bespoke measures dreamed up by places like the “Ludwig Center for Shared Economic Prosperity”
A new report finds the bottom 60% of U.S. households—or *two-thirds* of the population—can't afford a “minimal quality of life": housing, health care, and other necessities.

"Indicators like GDP and unemployment tell us the economy is thriving. But they don’t reflect the reality of most Americans."

What exactly is he trying to “preserve” ? The abject poverty that almost killed him
“Social solidarity is destroyed when you have too much migration too quickly,” JD Vance tells our columnist Ross Douthat in this episode of “Interesting Times.” “That’s not because I hate the migrants or I’m motivated by grievance. That’s because I’m trying to preserve something in my own country.”

In re: the utterly abject poverty & appalling bad faith of the right-wing law professors now trying to ignore/revise American history & the plain meaning of words in the 14th amendment to pretend that people born in America are not citizens.
I can’t quote this post but damn it’s such a good point. Plessy was 1896 and Wong Kim Ark was just two years later in 1898
